‘Legend’: JD Vance wins Halloween when he dresses up as his own viral meme

The vice president established himself as a “legend” on Halloween when he maxed out on not taking himself seriously with a meme-born costume.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump may have won hearts as they interacted with kids at the White House trick-or-treat event on Thursday, but the man increasingly earning the nickname ’48’ won all the laughs. Of course, unlike the heavily made-up or provocative costumes of some enjoying All Hallows Eve, Vice President J.D. Vance merely had to put on a wig and be a good sport as he became a “legend” as a fat-faced parody of himself.

Without explanation or even a caption, Friday, the vice president’s X account shared a close-up selfie, wide-eyed and grinning with the fake locks framing his face, hours after another Halloween post had featured a bald version of his countenance with the message, “CAN YOU HEAR THE SCREAMING.”

However, the images weren’t all that Vance had to share, as a video was later uploaded with a reference to the exchange that sparked the meme earlier in 2025.

The vice president’s X account posted the video from his TikTok as he could be heard saying as he answered the door, “Happy Halloween, kids, and remember, say thank you!” Vance’s lesson in etiquette had echoed his critique of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when the Eastern European leader had made himself the focal point of a tumultuous Oval Office visit, reneging on a previously arranged deal and earning himself the boot from the White House. The video ended with Vance spinning awash in a purple filter as the theme from “The Twilight Zone” played.

Vance hadn’t been alone in embracing meme culture in the days leading up to Halloween as the White House had shared a number of mock Spirit Halloween costumes that included a sombrero-equipped House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) that lacked common sense, the illegal alien-funding Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) lacking a spine, Vance without “fat JD curly hair,” and the president without a crown.

Podcaster Benny Johnson had suggested the costume was hardly a last-minute decision as he shared a video before Halloween revealing that he’d asked Vance what his costume would be amid online speculation.

“Stay tuned. The internet is going to love this,” Johnson recalled the vice president telling him while pointing to an image of the meme before declaring, “Ladies and gentlemen, your first meme lord vice president.”

Vance’s prediction was spot on as reactions flooded social media, raving about the former Ohio senator’s ability to make light of himself. At the same time, some hoped the costume would be a trend in the years to come, as other meme outfits were featured in the comments.
