‘Shutdown’ Schumer mum on if he’s voting for Mamdani

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has offered no endorsement of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and continues to avoid the topic.

The New York Democrat offered a non-answer when asked directly about the socialist New York State Assemblyman running for mayor of the Big Apple. Despite the formal backing of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) for Mamdani, which also came after dragging his feet, Schumer is not following suit.

“Mamdani, are you going to vote for him?” CNN’s Manu Raju asked on Wednesday.

“Look, the bottom line is very simple,” Schumer replied. “I have a good relationship with him, and we’re continuing to talk.”

“The vote is on Tuesday. What are you going to do?” the reporter asked, but Schumer continued to walk away.

Jeffries gave a curt response when a reporter asked him if there is a “rift” in the Democratic Party since the party leaders in the Senate and House are not on the same page with Mamdani.

“No,” the New York lawmaker replied to the inquiry.

Jeffries believes Mamdani has “relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy.”

“In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election,” Jeffries said in a statement.

Speaking of Schumer endorsing Mamdani, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told the New York Post this week, “I don’t think he has to do it.”

“I think he feels like on his ledger — and he’s totally transactional — on his ledger, he’s stored up enough goodwill because he’s fighting Trump on this shutdown now, and that, maybe, that gets him out of having to do something. … crazy,” the South Dakota Republican said.

“If I’m him,” Thune told the Post, “and you know, he, this guy [Mamdani] is so far, he’s such a wack, that it just moves him [Schumer] even further out of the mainstream.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has given her nod of approval for Mamdani after initially withholding support.
