An October surprise in Virginia revealed the Democratic candidate aiming to be top cop once outlined a violent fantasy about a Republican, and his apology appeared to miss the mark.
“Nope. That ain’t gonna do it.”
At a time when the left is desperately trying to push a “both sides” argument about violent rhetoric in the United States — the same kind of rhetoric faulted for the assassination of Charlie Kirk and multiple attempts on the life of President Donald Trump — past messages of former Virginia Del. Jay Jones came to light.
In them, the Democrat once again seeking the office of Virginia Attorney General had imagined a scenario where then-Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R) would get “two bullets to the head” before asserting the man’s children were “little fascists.”
“I take full responsibility for my actions, and I want to issue my deepest apology to Speaker Gilbert and his family. Reading back those words made me sick to my stomach. I am embarrassed, ashamed, and sorry,” read a statement from Jones. “I have reached out to Speaker Gilbert to apologize directly to him, his wife Jennifer, and their children. I cannot take back what I said; I can only take full accountability and offer my sincere apology.”

The messages in question had first been reported by National Review and were part of an August 2022 exchange with Del. Carrie Coyner (R) at a time when other Republican delegates had made public statements eulogizing former Del. Joe Johnson (D), who’d passed away at 90 years old.
Within the exchange, Jones had expressed how, given the opportunity, he would go to the funerals of Republican officials “to piss on their graves” before juxtaposing Gilbert with Adolf Hitler and Pol Pot in a scenario where there were only two bullets and stating, “Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.”
“Spoiler: put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know and he receives both bullets every time,” the Democrat had also said.
BREAKING: A SCANDAL is erupting in the Virginia Attorney General election after Democrat candidate Jay Jones FANTASIZED about Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert being shot, said he would “piss on the graves” of Republicans, and hoped for the death of their children.

It had also been reported that in the middle of the text thread, a phone conversation took place before the messages continued, at which point, Jones expressed, “I mean do I think Todd and Jennifer are evil? And that they’re breeding little fascists? Yes.”
Reacting to the messages, Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican nominee for governor, had stated, “This is horrible to read and should be wholly disqualifying of someone running for an office that protects the people of Virginia. Jay Jones’ horrific comments are a symptom of the entire Democratic Party and his running mate, Abigail Spanberger, needs to call on him to drop out. Attorney General Jason Miyares has served the people of Virginia with honor and dignity, and will continue to do so come November. Jay Jones can never be Attorney General of Virginia.”

Likewise, Del. Geary Higgins (R) had expressed in a statement to Fox News Digital, “They shot the president. They killed Charlie Kirk. They threatened to kill Kim Taylor. They said they’d kill me at my next rally, then my kids. Now we learn Jay Jones repeatedly said he wanted to kill Speaker Todd Gilbert. Is this what ‘letting your rage fuel you’ looks like?” as he referenced a remark from former Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger, the Democrat nominee for governor.
Much like former legislative hopeful Susanna Gibson had faulted Republicans after reports detailed that she’d live-streamed sex acts with her husband for “tips” from viewers, Jones too had taken on the role of victim in a statement to Fox News Digital where he said in part, “Let’s be clear about what is happening in the attorney general race right now: Jason Miyares is dropping smears through Trump-controlled media organizations to assault my character and rescue his desperate campaign.”
“This is a strategy that ensures Jason Miyares will continue to be accountable to Donald Trump, not the people of Virginia. This race is about whether Trump can control Virginia or Virginians control Virginia,” he went on.
Jones’ public statement added, “Virginians deserve honest leaders who admit when they are wrong and own up to their mistakes. This was a grave mistake and I will work every day to prove to the people of Virginia that I will fight for them as Attorney General.”
Meanwhile, as Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) had seemingly yet to comment on the text messages, he had commented earlier in the week about Jones’ 2022 reckless driving conviction “after speeding at 116 mph.”
“The job of attorney general is too important to leave to someone who would recklessly break the law and endanger the lives of others, and then mislead the Courts and the public by claiming he performed community service while working on his own political operation,” stated the incumbent governor amid a close race. “We need to get to the bottom of what Jay Jones was actually up to, but it’s clear he cannot be Virginia’s top cop.”
