MAGA-hating Bad Bunny’s defiant message after NFL Super Bowl honor

The season’s highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime show will be headlined by a Puerto Rican pop star who skipped touring the U.S. because of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

“The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Sunday that Bad Bunny will lead the halftime festivities from Levi’s Stadium on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, California,” CBS News reported, describing the 31-year-old, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, as ” one of the world’s most streamed artists.”

“What I’m feeling goes beyond myself,” Bad Bunny said in a statement. “It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL.”

“I’ve been thinking about it these days, and after discussing it with my team, I think I’ll do just one date in the United States,” he wrote in a post on X, in a reference to his decision to skip a U.S. stop on his Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour.

Rapper, producer, and Roc Nation founder Jay-Z said what the Puerto Rican musician has “done and continues to do for Puerto Rico is truly inspiring. We are honored to have him on the world’s biggest stage.”

The winner of multiple Grammy awards, Bad Bunny has also appeared in movies such as “Bullet Train,” “Caught Stealing,” and “Happy Gilmore 2.”

A short video teasing the announcement shows the artist sitting on a goalpost wearing what CBS News describes as “a Puerto Rican straw hat, which is a nod to Puerto Rican mid-century farmers.”

“The song speaks to the reality that Puerto Ricans must leave the homeland if they are to thrive. It is a song that immigrants of all origins have embraced as an anthem,” the outlet explained.

While the artist and his fans celebrated the Super Bowl performance, many X users called out the NFL for what was seen as a political move.

“This is not a pick designed to unite football fans or let people just enjoy the show. It was a pick designed to divide fans and no doubt Bad Bunny will find some way to push a woke message,” conservative Robby Starbuck wrote on X.

“Are NFL owners in on this idiocy or are they just culturally that disconnected from reality and how Roger uses the NFL to push left wing social issues? Is it that hard to pick a unifying music act who doesn’t want to peddle woke propaganda?” he asked. “Does this guy really scream American football to anyone? Be for real with me. No one thinks he does. This isn’t about music, it’s about putting a guy on stage who hates Trump and MAGA.”

Many agreed with Starbuck.
