Jimmy Kimmel’s return brought with it more than an expected non-apology as reactions called out the “Pathetic” spin while the president proposed to “test ABC out on this.”
Amid pressure from some of its own actors who’d called for subscribers to cancel their Disney+ plans in protest of the late-night host’s suspension, ABC followed through with the decision to restore its regularly scheduled programming Tuesday night. The decision by some affiliates to continue to preempt the comedian may have proven justified as Kimmel played the victim over his comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Rather than lead with a statement to clear the air, Tuesday’s remarks were framed in the context of free speech and democratic ideas as he thanked his late-night peers and the protestation of supporters before actually addressing the remarks that led to the suspension.
“It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it,” stated Kimmel, who contended that his comments may have been “ill-timed or unclear, or maybe both.”
“For those who think I did point a finger, I get why you’re upset. If the situation was reversed, there’s a good chance I’d have felt the same way,” he went on as commentator Scott Jennings reacted, “You used the phrase ‘MAGA gang’ & then lied about what happened. You definitely intended to make light of it and mislead the American people. Pathetic.”

As had been reported, Kimmel’s chance to opine about Kirk’s assassination on the air included him saying, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
Tuesday night, he insisted, “I have many friends and family members on the other side who I love and remain close to, even though we don’t agree on politics at all. I don’t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone. This was a sick person who believed violence was a solution, and it isn’t. Ever.”
“And also, selfishly, I am, I am a person who gets a lot of threats. I get many ugly and scary threats against my life, my wife, my kids, my coworkers because of what I choose to say. And I know those threats don’t come from the kind of people on the right who I know and love. So that’s what I wanted to say on that subject,” added the late-night host, who continued to call out perceived injustice about CBS’s decision to bring about the end of Stephen Colbert’s program as he demonized the FCC and, in particular, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.
Ahead of Kimmel’s return, President Donald Trump teased the potential of another lawsuit for ABC following the settlement of the defamation suit that was brought against the network and anchor George Stephanopoulos.
“I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back. The White House was told by ABC that his Show was cancelled! Something happened between then and now because his audience is GONE, and his ‘talent’ was never there,” the president wrote on Truth Social. “Why would they want someone back who does so poorly, who’s not funny, and who puts the Network in jeopardy by playing 99% positive Democrat GARBAGE. He is yet another arm of the DNC and, to the best of my knowledge, that would be a major Illegal Campaign Contribution. I think we’re going to test ABC out on this. Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative. A true bunch of losers! Let Jimmy Kimmel rot in his bad Ratings.”
In addition to the expressed disdain over the non-apology from Kimmel, others zeroed in on the host’s remarks about widow Erika Kirk’s public forgiveness of her husband’s assassin, with hope that he might demonstrate that which he admired after saying, “There was a moment over the weekend, a very beautiful moment. I don’t know if you saw this. On Sunday, Erika Kirk forgave the man who shot her husband. She forgave him. That is an example we should follow. If you believe in the teachings of Jesus, as I do, there it was. That’s, that’s it. A selfless act of grace, forgiveness from a grieving widow. It touched me deeply. And I hope it touches many. And if there’s anything we should take from this tragedy to carry forward, I hope it can be that.”
Its great that he can recognize grace.
I hope he can also demonstrate it.— Robert Jordan (@knavishknight) September 24, 2025
All he had to say was: “I was wrong and I did harm to people who didn’t deserve it. I ask for forgiveness without excuse or reservation”

Pretty much what we expected. A non-apology apology that doesn’t even address the people affected by this–the “MAGA gang”

How many times did he practice that break in his voice to mimic a human with a soul

That monologue is one lie after the other… Him working up his crocodile tears was the cherry on top right? Isn’t it rich how he made the whole thing about him and then said close to the end he wasn’t making it about him?

Did I miss the words “ I am sorry” or “ my apologies to Erika and her children?” Kimmel did not misspeak. What he said he said intentionally
