Former AG Bill Barr slithers out amid Epstein-mania

Former Attorney General William Barr reportedly spoke with President Donald Trump on at least two occasions about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Transcripts from Barr’s testimony before a  House investigative panel were released this week, revealing that the then-AG discussed Epstein’s death in 2019 with the president, who was serving his first term at that time.

“One was when I heard about the suicide,” Barr told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee last month.

“I called him up and said, ‘You better brace for this,’ and I told him words to that effect,” Barr added, according to the transcripts that were made public on Tuesday.

He recounted to the panel how he told the president at the time that Epstein “committed suicide,” and he said Trump also “suspected it was apparently suicide.”

“He had the same reaction I did, which was, ‘How the hell did that happen, he’s in federal custody?’” Barr recalled.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), released Barr’s full deposition from his appearance before the panel in August.

Barr went on to note that he and the president believed a lot of “conspiracy theories” would follow and that a vigorous investigation would be undertaken.

“And I think I conveyed to him that it was appalling and that we were going to investigate it vigorously,” Barr told the House panel, “and he had the same reaction I did, which is, ‘This is going to certainly generate a lot of conspiracy theories.’”

“These are not his exact words, but that’s what I remember about the conversation being effectively — maybe words to the effect, yeah,” he added, according to the transcript.

The former attorney general noted that he only recalled one other conversation with Trump about Epstein.

“The president said something to the effect that he had broken off with Epstein long ago and that he had actually pushed him out of Mar-a-Lago,” Barr said.
