Paramount’s pick to promote “journalistic integrity” at CBS News received the unofficial corporate media seal of approval with questions about his credentials.
Throughout 2025, the merger of CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, with Skydance Media was treated by talking heads as though it were contingent upon the approval of President Donald Trump. Now, as the media company announced Kenneth Weinstein to play the role of ombudsman at CBS News, the former administration ambassador nominee faced the expert class onslaught right on cue.
“Mr. Weinstein, who has no experience overseeing news coverage, was an unexpected choice for the role,” reported the New York Times concerning the former Hudson Institute CEO stepping into the role as the premier “independent, internal advocate for journalistic integrity and transparency” at CBS News.
Without mention of Weinstein’s tenure as chairman of the U.S. Agency for Global Media during the first Trump administration, previously known as the Broadcasting Board of Governors to which he’d been nominated to by then-President Barack Obama in 2013, the Gray Lady made note of about $40,000 in donations to “Republican and pro-Trump political groups” in 2024 and described him as having had a “long career in right-leaning and neoconservative public policy circles. He is a firm and vocal champion of Israel and a frequent critic of the Biden administration, once comparing the Biden White House to the bumbling characters of the television show ‘Veep.’”
Similarly, Variety wrote, “Paramount’s move may only add to questions about CBS News’ ability to remain objective. Because Weinstein has ties to government officials and world leaders and has led a policy organization with a defined political agenda, he might be seen as uniquely ill-suited to hold an ombudsman role at a major news organization that strives to cover news events with a down-the-middle perspective.”
As had been reported, CBS News faced a lawsuit from Trump for alleged election interference for the manner in which “60 Minutes” edited a pre-election interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. That suit ended with a $16 million settlement as the former controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, Shari Redstone, expressed her concerns over what may have come forward during discovery.
Weinstein’s appointment comes on the heels of reports that Bari Weiss, formerly of the Times, may be selling her The Free Press to Paramount and taking a role at CBS News, “guiding the editorial direction of the division.”

It also followed a promise from CBS News that it would only air “unedited” interviews going forward after backlash over a cut from a recent “Face the Nation” interview with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
Where the media company was concerned, Paramount President Jeff Shell was wholly positive about the ombudsman hire, stating, “We look forward to welcoming Ken as our new Ombudsman. At a time when trust in media is more important than ever, this new role reinforces our commitment to truth, trust, and accountability. I’ve known him for many years and have great respect for his integrity, sound judgment, and thoughtful approach to complex issues. Ken brings not only a wealth of advisory experience in media and beyond but also a calm, measured perspective that makes him exceptionally well-suited to serve as our Ombudsman.”
Speaking on his own behalf, Weinstein said, “I am honored to serve as Ombudsman for CBS News, one of the most respected journalistic institutions in the world. I look forward to supporting the talented team behind its reporting and to stewarding public trust in this critical institution.”
