Jesse Watters explains why Gavin Newsom’s ‘got nothin’ when it comes to nationwide electability

Daily Caller News Foundation

Fox’s Jesse Watters said Thursday on “The Five” that Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom has “got nothin” on winning the 2028 presidential election because he lacks the strength to push back on the radical left.

Since launching his gerrymandering campaign in California, Newsom has remained in the media spotlight and received support from Democrats who continue to cheer him on in his efforts against the Trump administration. While discussing the backing of Newsom, Watters was asked to share his thoughts on the governor.

“I was going to say that I’ve never seen anybody detransition like Gavin Newsom. The guy was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle, OK? Then goes crazy, starts marching in gay pride parades, starts locking down like Fauci and crying on television. Now he’s talking like Mike Tyson? Give me a break,” Watters said. “Jessica is right, though. His media team has game. They’re spitting all this hot stuff, these memes.”

Newsom’s press office has recently adopted a new strategy on X, appearing to post in a mocking style similar to President Donald Trump. The Democrat governor has also fired back on his own account, responding to Republicans and others who have criticized his leadership.

Watters said he viewed the tactic as “funny,” before saying that Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis pointed out how Newsom “talks a big game, but no one can get a permit to rebuild their house in the Palisades” during a recent interview with Watters.  The Fox host added that Newsom’s attacks on Republicans are “all sizzle, no steak,” comparing him to former Texas Democrat Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

“But the problem is he doesn’t have that first round quarterback moxie that can rally a locker room. And that’s really what you do when you gamble on these guys. Two problems. Big. Nancy Pelosi is his mentor. You never want to have a female mentor if you’re a guy,” Watters said. “It’s obvious.”

“Second, he’s not strong enough. Americans want power, and Democrats really want power. They want an FDR. They want a Trump. They want a Teddy Roosevelt. Someone to come in and knock heads together,” Watters said. “Gavin Newsom has never shown an ability to not care what the radical left thinks and just do what he thinks is right. So until he gets that, he’s got nothin.”

Chaos between Republicans and Democrats broke out in July after members of the Texas GOP introduced new congressional maps that are poised to add five additional U.S. House seats. While Democrat lawmakers in the state attempted to flee to block the vote, Newsom responded with his own strategy.

In November, California voters will be asked to vote on new redistricting maps that aim to remove about six Republicans from California’s House delegation, transferring redistricting authority from the independent commission to the state Legislature.

Despite Democrats rallying against the Trump administration, the party has dropped in voter registrations, and their approval ratings have plummeted to near-historic lows. While Newsom has not officially announced a run for the 2028 election, speculation about his potential candidacy has circulated.

According to PolyMarket’s prediction, Newsom has an 18% chance of winning in 2028 if he were to run, trailing Vice President JD Vance, who sits at 27% as of Thursday.
