President Donald Trump expressed disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said the U.S. will be sending Patriot air defense munitions to Ukraine.
Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that Ukraine “desperately” needs the help, but did not specify how many Patriot missiles would be sent. He did, however, emphasize that the U.S. would not be paying for the defense systems in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.

The president indicated that he will be meeting Monday with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, and noted how the U.S. will be reimbursed for equipment being sent to Ukraine.
“I haven’t agreed on the number yet, but they’re going to have some because they do need protection, but the European Union is paying for it. We’re not paying anything for it, but we will send it,” Trump said.
“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need, because Putin has really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then he bombs everybody in the evening. A little bit of a problem there. I don’t like it,” he added.

The decision to send the missiles seemed to be an about-face for the president and his administration, which moved to halt some shipments last week as the Pentagon reviewed U.S. military stockpiles.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the reversal in a statement.
“At President Trump’s direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops,” Parnell said.
“Our framework for POTUS to evaluate military shipments across the globe remains in effect and is integral to our America First defense priorities,” he added.
