Minnesota gunman nabbed, his wife pulled over as cops make discovery inside vehicle

When authorities pulled over the wife of the man suspected of killing Democratic State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, they found a trove of suspicious items in her car.

As the manhunt was underway for Vance Boelter, who was found and charged late Sunday, authorities detained his wife after a traffic stop at a convenience store near Onamia on Saturday morning. Boelter’s wife, Jenny, and three other relatives were in the car when the traffic stop was made between 10 and 11 a.m., according to KSTP.

“A witness says about a dozen law enforcement squads converged on the vehicle and remained on the scene for two to three hours,” the station reported. “Two sources tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the vehicle contained a weapon, ammunition, cash, and passports. No one has been arrested – just questioned.”

It was unclear from the initial reports if it was a random traffic stop or if the suspect’s wife was being tracked by authorities.

The 57-year-old suspect is charged with shooting and killing Rep. Hortman and her husband, Mark, in Champlin.  Boelter also allegedly shot and wounded Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in nearby Brooklyn Park.

Boelter was reportedly armed when he was taken into custody, according to law enforcement.

“We got him,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz noted in a post on social media.
