Providence, Rhode Island, city officials have agreed to fly the Palestinian flag at their capital and say it’s no big deal.
“Providence City Hall displays many different flags throughout the year to mark different occasions and honor the many ethnic and cultural backgrounds and traditions that make our city strong,” a spokesperson for the Providence City Council told Fox News Digital Wednesday.
The flag will be displayed on Thursday during the city council meeting and outside City Hall on Friday, Fox reported.
The Irish flag, Armenian flag, Israeli flag, and Dominican flag have all been flown at Providence’s City Hall in recent months, according to the spokesperson.
“Like those examples, this idea came to us from the community as part of a request to honor the important role Palestinian-Americans play in the fabric of our beautifully diverse city,” the spokesperson said.
A representative for Democrat Mayor Brett Smiley suggested it was the city council’s prerogative, Fox reported. No American flags will be removed or displaced by the display, city officials emphasized.
Providence is not alone in its affinity for Palestine; the mayor of Hoboken, NJ, received backlash for raising the Palestinian flag at its City Hall in November.
“Squad” member Rashida Talib has also proudly flown the Palestinian flag outside her office in Washington, D.C.
As for Providence? The city took a beating on X, where the news spread:

You have to be kidding. This is why we need a federal rule on what flags should be on federal and state buildings. A simple American flag, a POW flag, and a state flag—that’s it.
How could they put that flag up with all the blood attached? This America I’m not ready to give…— Thomas DeMattia (@whitlytt) May 15, 2025

This is absolutely freakin insane, Providence, Rhode Island, hoisting a Palestinian flag at City Hall? These people hate the U.S. They’re ignoring the American values that built this nation. It’s a slap in the face to every patriot. Diversity? More like division. City Hall should…
