Schumer fumes when Trump admin boots Dems off credit union watchdog

Democrat board members are piping mad after they were booted off the board for the National Credit Union Administration.

“The decision of the White House to fire me before the completion of my term is wrong. It violates the bipartisan statutory framework adopted by Congress to protect credit union members and their deposits,” Todd Harper, who was nominated by President Trump in 2019, said in a statement.

The NCUA works as a watchdog group, which is tasked with protecting members and regulating credit unions.

“If a President can fire an NCUA Board member at any time, how will we maintain public trust in our nation’s financial services regulatory system?” Harper continued.

Tanya Otsuka said she learned of her termination in an email delivered on Tuesday and called it a “yet another attempt to undermine the rule of law and blatantly ignore Congress and our democratic values,” according to The Hill.

Harper, who was promoted to board chair by Biden in 2021, was set to remain in place until 2027, while Otsuka’s term was to expire in 2029.

Democrat Senate Leader Chuck Schumer decried the firings on X:

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the firings, saying “the chief executive of the executive branch reserves the right to fire anyone he wants,” she said, according to The Hill.

Republican Chair Kyle Hauptman is currently the last remaining board member.
