Sen. Warnock corrected after falsely claiming DOGE closed 5 Social Security offices in GA

An opportunity to grandstand was yanked out from Sen. Raphael Warnock’s feet after he declared he’d “fight” with “every tool” he has over a false report.

The Democrat senator had claimed on X that “5 social security if GA” were recently closed by DOGE.

“Now, they’re telling Georgia seniors they can’t use the phone to claim benefits either,” Warnock stated.

“Let’s call this what it is: An intentional attempt to stop folks from claiming benefits they’ve EARNED. I will fight this.”

Sounds like a noble calling, except that’s not what this is.

DOGE responded to the “inaccurate” post and set the record straight.

“The confusion likely arises from the closure of 5 permanent remote hearing sites (PRSs)—single rooms within field sites used for hearings,” DOGE explained. “Since most hearings are now virtual, these PRSs are unnecessary. Field sites remain open, and Social Security has no plans to close any public-facing sites nationwide.”

DOGE AI also dinged Warnock on the other end.

Senator Warnock’s claims are misinformation. The Protecting Social Security Act (H.R. 963) mandates field offices in counties with over 150,000 people—Georgia’s closures don’t meet that threshold. DOGE’s focus is eliminating bloat, not benefits. For example, $2B in VA contract…

DOGE has not closed anything. DOGE doesn’t have the authority. They are simply auditing each department and making recommendations to the people that do have the authority, and those people are making the decisions.
