President Donald Trump tore into his Democratic critics and called out one leader for becoming “a Palestinian.”

During a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the White House, Trump brought up Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as he defended Republicans on policies. The president ignited immediate backlash after he commented that the New York Democrat “isn’t Jewish anymore.”

“Are you planning to lower corporate taxes?” a reporter asked during the Wednesday meeting.

“Well, we are. We are planning to lower taxes. Yeah, if the Democrats behave, but the Democrats have no clue. You saw that the other night during the speech,” Trump responded, referring to the behavior of Democrats during his address to Congress.

“These people are sick. They don’t know what’s happening in the real world. The Democrats have to get their act together, and if they don’t vote, then what are you going to do is you’re going to have taxes that are going to go through the roof. You’re going to have a very bad time,” he continued.

“You’re going to have some very bad things happen, and people are going to blame the Democrats,” he said before turning attention to Schumer.

“And Schumer is a Palestinian as far as I’m concerned. You know, he’s become a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He’s not Jewish anymore. He’s a Palestinian. Okay,” Trump said.

Last month, the president referred to “the Palestinians, people like Chuck Schumer,” in a Truth Social post, saying they “would have already been resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities, with new and modern homes, in the region,” if the Gaza Strip was turned over to the U.S.

Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, criticized Trump for using a “slur” against Schumer, saying it was “offensive and beneath the dignity of his office.”

“He should apologize to the Palestinian and American people. It is the continuing dehumanization of the Palestinian people that has resulted in horrific hate crimes against Palestinian Americans, the US-enabled genocide in Gaza, and decades of denial of Palestinian human rights by successive presidential administrations,” the CAIR official said.

Schumer has defended Israel and condemned anti-Israel protests that erupted after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas terrorists. But in March 2024, the Democrat called for new elections in Israel as he increasingly criticized the Netanyahu government, saying the prime minister “continues to pursue dangerous and inflammatory policies that test existing US standards for assistance.”

This week, Schumer reacted to the arrest of former Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil.

I abhor many of the opinions and policies that Mahmoud Khalil holds and supports, and have made my criticism of the antisemitic actions at Columbia loudly known. Mr. Khalil is also legal permanent resident here, and his wife, who is 8-months pregnant, is an American citizen.…

“While he may well be in violation of various campus rules regarding how the protests were conducted last year, that is a matter for the university to pursue,” Schumer wrote on X. “The Trump administration’s DHS must articulate any criminal charges or facts that would justify his detention or the initiation of deportation proceedings against him.”

While there were many clutching their pearls over Trump’s remarks on the Democrat leader, others had decidedly different opinions.
