Freed Hamas hostage delivers urgent message to President Trump

Gov. Ron DeSantis believes property taxes could be eliminated in his state of Florida but it will take a constitutional amendment to make it happen.

The Republican governor responded to a social media user who posed the question about the Sunshine State’s property taxes, writing in a post on X that “we really need to abolish property taxes here in Florida.”

“What do we need to do to make this happen?” the X user asked.

“Property taxes are local, not state. So we’d need to do a constitutional amendment (requires 60% of voters to approve) to eliminate them (which I would support) or even to reform/lower them,” DeSantis replied.

“We should put the boldest amendment on the ballot that has a chance of getting that 60%,” the former GOP presidential candidate continued.

“I agree that taxing land/property is the more oppressive and ineffective form of taxation,” DeSantis added.

The bold idea got plenty of support, notably from President Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump.

“Florida leading the way! This is amazing!” he wrote on X, sharing DeSantis’s post.

And Trump was not alone in his praise as the governor’s post had garnered nearly 5 million views and over 63 thousand likes on X.

“We need to limit these property taxes in more ways than we do,” DeSantis said at a news conference earlier this month.

“Home prices have gone up. Part of it is inflation, but part of it in Florida is demand. It’s a lot of people that have demand to live here in Northwest Florida. I mean, it’s a hot spot and so, you have the home prices going up, interest rates have gone up. So people want to get a mortgage. That’s more difficult,” he said.

“We can’t control private markets, but we can control how much they can tax you. So we’re going to be working over the next year and a half to see what we can present for voters to be able to vote in the next election for some major, major property tax limitations and reliefs,” DeSantis said.
