U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar is once again lecturing on what she considers to be “un-American” in proposing to repeal a law signed by John Adams in 1798.
The more-than 200-year-old wartime immigration law was invoked by President Donald Trump in addressing his crackdown on illegal immigration. Omar used the occasion to once again bring up her Neighbors not Enemies Act in hopes of repealing the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
Joined by Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), the Minnesota Democrat called out Trump’s plans as “another moral stain on our country.”
“We cannot allow antiquated laws to continue enabling discriminatory practices that harm immigrant communities,” Omar said in a statement. “The Alien Enemies Act has been used to target immigrants based solely on their nationality, leading to shameful chapters in our history like the internment of Japanese, Italian, and German-Americans during World War II. President Trump’s new administration is also threatening to use this law for sweeping detentions and deportations of immigrants without due process based solely on national origin. Repealing this law is a necessary step toward creating an immigration system rooted in justice and compassion.”
The progressive ‘Squad’ member recently called out fellow Democrats for sending the “wrong message” by attending Trump’s inauguration.

“In his war on immigrants, Donald Trump has made clear that he will stop at nothing to carry out mass deportations, including invoking the archaic, little known Alien Enemies Act of 1798,” Hirono said in a statement. “The Neighbors Not Enemies Act would finally repeal this draconian, xenophobic law to prevent immigrants from being deported without basic due process. Even though Trump insists that he is targeting ‘foreign gangs’ and ‘criminal networks,’ we know that the deportations won’t end there.”
Trump brought up the 18th-century law in his inaugural address.
“By invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, I will direct our government to use the full and immense power of federal and state law enforcement to eliminate the presence of all foreign gangs and criminal networks bringing devastating crime to U.S. soil, including our cities and inner cities,” he said.
Omar was blasted on social media where X users ripped into her “un-American” views about securing the nation’s borders.
