At least one decision was made on Florida’s Senate vacancy as Lara Trump addressed her “consideration” and teased another “big announcement” for the new year.

Of President-elect Donald Trump’s myriad staffing nominations from the Sunshine State, the selection of Sen. Marco Rubio to lead the State Department was perhaps the most buzzworthy outside of attacks on former Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Now, similar to Gaetz who’d withdrawn himself from the attorney general nomination, the president-elect’s daughter-in-law had taken herself out of the mix of those Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may or may not have been vetting for the appointment.

“After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” she said in a statement posted to X, captioning a social media poll that suggested broad support had she been chosen.

The announcement from Lara Trump came less than two weeks after she had revealed that she would be stepping down from her position as co-chair of the Republican National Committee at the next meeting having, “accomplished all three,” of the stated goals during her tenure that began in March 2024.

“I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida,” she went on in her Saturday statement. “I have read so many of your kind messages and I cannot thank you enough.”

Monday at Mar-a-Lago, during his first press conference since the election, Trump had been questioned by a reporter as to whether or not he expected DeSantis to pick his daughter-in-law to replace Rubio should he be confirmed.

“I probably don’t, but I don’t know,” admitted the president-elect who lauded her efforts at the RNC, particularly on election integrity. He also complemented the governor who’d been putting unspecified contenders through a “thorough vetting process and interview process” in seeking the best candidate.

“Ron’s doing a good job with his choice,” said Trump as reports had suggested Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, Attorney General Ashley Moody, chief of staff James Uthmeier and former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner were potential picks.

DeSantis had remained relatively mum on the process, but had said in part upon the nomination of Rubio, “Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results.”

Senator Marco Rubio is expected to resign from the Senate to assume duties as Secretary of State when the Trump administration takes power on January 20th, creating a vacancy roughly two months from today.

Meanwhile, Lara Trump offered “the best of luck” to the governor in completing his appointment as she herself teased an announcement for early 2025.

“I do have a big announcement that I’m excited to share in January, so, stay tuned,” she concluded her statement. “I remain passionate about public service and look forward to serving our country again sometime in the future. In the meantime, I wish Governor DeSantis the best of luck with this appointment.”
