Jill Biden casts longing gaze at Trump at Notre Dame and social media can’t stop talking

The City of Lights was no match for the twinkle in First Lady Jill Biden’s eye to those reacting to her latest encounter with President-elect Donald Trump.

More than five years after a fire ravaged Notre-Dame de Paris, Archbishop Laurent Ulrich’s crozier, carved from recovered beams from the blaze, was knocked three times on the door to ceremonial reopen the cathedral.

While many marveled at the awakening of the organ, the chiming of the bells and the echo of prayers filling the space once more, the interaction between Trump, Biden and her daughter Ashley was a delight unto itself.

After having been received at the Élysée Palace earlier in the day by French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron, the president-elect was later greeted in a procession of dignitaries outside the cathedral before entering to take his seat between Macron and his wife, Brigitte.

Sitting one seat over from the GOP leader were the Bidens who appeared exceedingly friendly in their exchange or, as one comment suggested, “Jill and Ashley Biden look like they’re absolutely in love with President Trump.”

The most recent meeting between the pair came on the heels of Trump’s return to the White House following his Election Night victory when President Joe Biden, unable to attend the reopening over a reported scheduling conflict, had warmly offered a “Welcome back” as the two sat by a fire in the Oval Office.

That occasion had included a group photo of the president, first lady and president-elect that furthered speculation that the Biden’s had voted for Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris that was only reinforced by the cordiality shown to the former rival compared to the cold shoulder that had been offered to the Democratic Party’s failed candidate.

Amid references to Rick’s farewell to Ilsa at the airport in “Casablanca” and smatterings of Artificial Intelligence-created videos depicting the pair leaning in for a patient kiss or duking it out in an all-out brawl, social media users sounded off with theories on what what might have been said while waiting for the ceremony to officially begin.

In addition to the stir caused by the Bidens’ behavior with Trump, for a change it wasn’t the first lady getting criticized for her wardrobe decision. Instead, it was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who, no matter the occasion, has maintained a war-casual style choice since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Surrounded by besuited and elegant world leaders while adorned with a sweatshirt, slacks and combat boots, the recipient of billions of dollars in U.S. taxpayer money was readily chided for failing to put on a suit to mark the occasion with deserved respect.

As one person suggested, “If the war is so bad that you can’t dress well, you should also have zero time to spend at events like this.”
