Social media users ripped the city of Boston after an official move to the leftwing Bluesky platform as a snub to Elon Musk’s X.
“Hey Boston, we’re here!” a post on the new Bluesky account read.
“City teams are building accounts and making moves to make Bluesky our home. Stay tuned. In the meantime, you can follow a few of our first official accounts: @boston-streets.bsky.social, @bostonparks.bsky.social, and @healthyboston.bsky.social.” Boston’s post added.
BREAKING:
The city of Boston announces it is ditching @elonmusk’s X and moving all of their accounts over to X’s rival platform pic.twitter.com/aLClReudS0— Bostonians Against Mayor Wu (@AntiWuCoalition) November 29, 2024
While the City of Boston launching an account on Bluesky did not necessarily mean that it was no longer operating the one on X, users had plenty of thoughts about the announcement.
For real

At the start of 2023, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced she was cutting back on personal Twitter use because she found the platform “toxic.”
“I’ve experienced this platform becoming more and more toxic over the last year, and it’s a direction that makes it a less productive use of my personal time to reach constituents about local issues,” Wu said in an interview at the time.
“There’s been a crowding out of many voices and forms of debate, with conspiracy theories or many accounts, most often anonymous, posting in bad faith about conspiracy theories or spreading misinformation,” she added.
The Bluesky platform was launched in 2019 by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to be “a protocol for public conversation.”
“Elon Musk’s new policies drove 500,000 new users to join Bluesky after X signaled that blocked accounts would be able to see a user’s public posts,” The Hill reported. “Journalists have flocked to the platform in recent weeks due to its connectivity and audience-friendly model.”
But the City of Boston’s announced move was met with ridicule and criticism by X users.
They might as well announce that they are ditching capitalism and moving to its rival, communism, and be done with it.

People who tell the truth don’t fear criticism, just saying.

“So we’ve decided to only communicate to the small minority of people who agree with our radical policies on an obscure social media platform.” How nice.
