Donald Trump is a threat to the Washington DC establishment class. They opposed him in 2016 and did nothing to help him in 2024.
Perhaps no greater example of this is the Koch Network.
The Koch Network opposed Donald Trump during the 2024 primary for the Republican nomination. As President Trump was being raided by Biden’s DOJ, the Koch Network was spending millions against him. While President Trump was being indicted by Democrat prosecutors and Jack Smith, the Koch Network was backing Nikki Haley and opposing Donald Trump. In fact, in November of 2023, they endorsed Nikki Haley and used their vast donor and political network to oppose Donald Trump.
After the primary, politicians, groups and donors that opposed Donald Trump ended up unifying to support him. The goal was clear: Republicans could not afford another four years of Joe Biden at the time, and later in the race, could not afford having Kamala Harris as president for eight years. Even some of President Trump’s biggest rivals such as Ron DeSantis ended up endorsing him and throwing his support behind Trump. There is one big exception: The Koch Network. They never endorsed President Trump against Kamala Harris or supported his campaign. In fact, Time Magazine even had a headline back in September that read, “Where The Koch Network Is Putting Their Money — Anywhere But Trump.” As one Trump campaign insider tells this outlet, “The Koch Network did nothing to help President Trump as he was being persecuted by the Biden DOJ. They did nothing to help us defeat Kamala Harris. Do not expect the Trump Administration to forget.”
Not only does the Koch Network oppose President Trump politically, but they fund groups that oppose his current policy goals. During his first term in the White House, President Trump signed an executive order that would havelowered the cost of prescription drugs by reforming drug supply middlemen—the Pharmacy Benefit Managers orPBMs. In 2024, Trump ran on lowering the cost of drugs for all Americans. One of the biggest groups that Koch Network funds is Paragon Health Institute. Just recently, they received almost $3 million from the Koch Network.
Paragon is currently lobbying against PBM reform, which would fix misaligned incentives to make drugs more affordable for the average American. House Oversight Chairman James Comer’s investigation into PBM’s pointed out that PBMs use harmful pricing tactics, which increase the cost of prescription drugs. Right now, Paragon Health Institute, a group funded by the anti-Trump Koch Network, is opposing PBM reform, something President Trump supported during his first term. One Capitol Hill Republican aide tells this outlet, “Paragon is on notice as anti-Trump, and pro-PBM. In Trump’s Washington, they have no influence and should not be taken seriously.”
