President-elect Donald Trump’s former attorney general believes prosecutors need to heed the message from American voters and dismiss pending cases against him.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr told Fox News Digital that Americans gave Trump a sweeping victory despite all the charges thrown at him in multiple lawsuits.

“The American people have rendered their verdict on President Trump, and decisively chosen him to lead the country for the next four years,” Barr said. “They did that with full knowledge of the claims against him by prosecutors around the country and I think Attorney General Garland and the state prosecutors should respect the people’s decision and dismiss the cases against President Trump now.”

The issues in the cases “have now been extensively aired and rejected by the American people,” Barr told the outlet, noting that some of the arguments in the lawsuits have been “greatly weakened by a series of court decisions.”

The cases brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith in Washington, D.C., and Florida could be brought to an end by an attorney general that Trump appoints after taking office.

“It’s so easy. I would fire [Smith] within two seconds. He’ll be one of the first things addressed,” Trump told Hugh Hewitt in an interview last month.

In Florida, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon threw out the 40 criminal counts in the classified documents case brought by Smith. The special counsel appealed the case after the judge dismissed it due to Smith not being appointed by the president or confirmed by Congress.

State cases brought against Trump in New York and Georgia are another matter, however, as he would be unable to do anything about them. The president-elect is due for sentencing in the New York criminal case for reportedly falsifying business records in a hush money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels. In Georgia, Trump faces criminal charges over alleged efforts to overturn 2020 election results in the Peach State.

“Further maneuvering on these cases in the weeks ahead would serve no legitimate purpose and only distract the country and the incoming administration from the task at hand,” Barr told Fox News Digital.

“The public interest now demands that the country unite and focus on the challenges we face at home and abroad. Attorney General Garland and all the state prosecutors should do the right thing and help the country move forward by dismissing the cases,” he added.

He slammed the New York case for being “rife with legal abuse and error.”

“If it were continued to be litigated it would ultimately be overturned, but we shouldn’t put up with that kind of distraction. And I think the right thing to do would be for the prosecutors to dismiss the case,” he contended.

“We’ll see what they think of democracy,” he responded when asked if the scenario would be likely.
