Trump trolls Mitch McConnell for endorsing him

Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell’s endorsement of former President Donald Trump has been mocked by the  GOP nominee as the two have reportedly not spoken since 2020.

The infamous rift between the two Republicans didn’t keep McConnell from giving Trump his endorsement back in March but the former president expressed his blunt assessment of the begrudging support.

“They caused inflation. They screwed up my energy policy and the prices went way up and everything else, real simple. In addition to that, they way overspent. They got trillions and trillions of dollars,” Trump said at a rally in North Carolina on Sunday, referring to inflation under Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s administration.

“Hopefully we get rid of Mitch McConnell pretty soon, because he helped them,” Trump added.

“Can you believe he endorsed me?” Trump said, prompting laughter from the rally crowd. “Boy, that must have been a painful day in his life.”

“He provided the necessary votes. What a disgrace,” he added of the Kentucky lawmaker who is the longest-serving leader in Senate history.

The 82-year-old Republican announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down from his leadership position.

“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said back in February. “So I stand before you today … to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”

According to a biography of the senator, McConnell privately denounced Trump as “stupid,” “ill-tempered” and “a despicable human being” after the 2020 election.

Back in 2021, Trump was abundantly clear about his feelings for McConnell, saying in a statement that “Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling hack, and if Republicans are going to stay with him, they will not win again.”

But it seems the senator could not just ignore the Trump Train gaining speed as he endorsed him in March of this year.

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for president of the United States,” he said in a statement at the time. “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support.”
