Migrants made not as visible in relocation ‘cover-up’ to improve optics before election, official says

A supervisor from a border county warned of “smoke and mirrors” from the Biden-Harris administration, alleging a relocation “cover-up” was underway “until potentially after the election.”

Vice President Kamala Harris’ focus on handouts and abortion didn’t detract from the reality that the crisis she has been tasked to oversee as “border czar” raged on. Now, according to San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond (R), an effort to keep appearances of containing the problem up front involved foreign nationals being transported to other parts of the country daily by the federal government.

Speaking out, Desmond took to X Sunday and argued, “This isn’t about the border for the Feds–it’s about optics.”

As he explained, “Border Patrol officials have informed me that street releases were set to resume again last Friday in San Diego County, adding to the more than 155,000 in the past year. But with the election around the corner, the Federal Government was worried about the optics, so every day, they’re bussing illegal immigrants from San Diego to Yuma, Arizona, to fly them across the country.”

The 155,000 figure referred to the number of foreign nationals that were released on the streets of San Diego between Sept. 2023 and June 2024 prior to executive action from President Joe Biden sold as limiting the number of new entries being permitted into the country.

“It appears to be the federal government trying to cover up by bussing people out of the area here instead of doing street releases,” Desmond told Fox News Digital as he reported three buses departing daily with border crossers traveling to Yuma while three to four planes were departing weekly — mostly to McAllen, Texas — with illegal aliens destined for processing.

“To me, I think the optics of having more people dropped off, or starting that drop-off process again, I think is politically harmful,” he told the outlet, “and so they’re not going to do it until potentially after the election.”

Between Oct. 6-12, the San Diego Sector of the Border Patrol reported 3,016 apprehensions of individuals from 59 different countries. They also encountered 96 unaccompanied minors.

“…we still are overwhelmed here in San Diego County to the point where we can’t handle the numbers that are coming across now,” Desmond said in part in a video posted to X Monday. “However, it’s no longer as visible. It’s much more clandestine and a little bit of smoke and mirrors, in my opinion.”

Highlighting hypocrisy, the supervisor made note of how Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida had taken heavy criticism for conveying aliens out of their respective states similar to what the federal government was up to.

“I think even in the Biden administration and people who are Democrats are perplexed as to ‘why are we doing this? Why are we not vetting these people?’ We want immigration, but we have to be vetting people. It just makes sense to do that,” he told Fox News Digital.

He further went on to tell radio host Glenn Beck on Monday’s installment of “The Glenn Beck Program” that local officials were prohibited from enforcing immigration law, “So even these people that are getting off the boats and walking into our neighborhoods, local law enforcement can’t do a thing about it.”

Desmond then explained that after June, the federal government had allocated $19 million from FEMA toward a migrant processing center and that those funds were sitting idle as hurricane victims were in need of help, but he expected if Harris were to win the election, the center would likely have to be constructed “right away.”
