Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the death of Yahya Sinwar after the Hamas leader was killed by an Israeli military drone.
The Republican presidential nominee had yet not spoken publicly about the death of the man behind the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. But Trump was asked about Sinwar on Friday as he arrived at a campaign stop in Michigan.
“My reaction is he was not a good person. That’s my reaction,” he told reporters. “That’s sometimes what happens.”
The former president was also asked if he had heard from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since the latest news.
“He’s called me. I have not spoken with him. He’s doing a good job,” he replied. “I think it makes it easier. I’m glad Bibi decided to do what he had to do but it’s moving along pretty good.”
“Biden is trying to hold him back,” Trump responded to another question, referring to President Joe Biden urging Israel to ease up on attacks in Gaza. “And he probably should be doing the opposite actually.”
Biden told reporters he called Netanyahu to “congratulate” him.
“I called Bibi Netanyahu to congratulate him on getting Sinwar,” the president, who was in Germany, said. “I told him that we were really pleased with his actions and, further, that now is the time to move on … towards a ceasefire in Gaza.”
“Justice has been served,” Vice President Harris said after the news of Sinwar’s death. “And the United States, Israel and the entire world are better off as a result. Sinwar was responsible for the killing of thousands of innocent people, including the victims of October 7 and hostages in Gaza. He had American blood on his hands.”
