Over quarter of Dems think US would be better off if Trump had been assassinated: Poll

Over a quarter of Democrats think the U.S. would be better off if former President Donald Trump had been successfully assassinated on Sunday, according to a Napolitan News Service poll released Wednesday.

Among those surveyed, 28% of Democrats and 27% of Democrat-leaning voters answered “yes” to the question asking if they thought the U.S. would be better off if Trump had been assassinated, with 17% of all respondents agreeing and only 7% of Republicans, according to the poll. Trump survived a second assassination attempt on Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach, FL, where would-be assassin Ryan Routh brought a rifle within 500 yards of Trump before he was engaged by the U.S. Secret Service and later apprehended.

Among those surveyed, 45% think that “anti-Trump rhetoric” played a role in the attempted assassination, according to the poll. Moreover, 41% of voters thought the “news media” played a role as well, while 30% believed the Trump campaign itself had had a role.

Routh’s arrest marks the second attempt on Trump’s life following his near-miss with death in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, where he was shot by Thomas Crooks during his rally. Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer fire chief in Butler, was killed while protecting his kids during the attack.

Trump accused Vice President Kamala Harris of using rhetoric that encouraged his attempted assassination, citing “highly inflammatory” language from Democrats, according to Fox News Digital. He pointed to specific accusations from Harris and President Joe Biden that he is a “threat to democracy.”

In the demographic breakdown, 30% of Hispanics thought America would be better off with Trump dead, while 19% of blacks and 14% of whites thought the same, according to the poll. Young people answered in the affirmative the most across party lines, with 23% of respondents ages 18-34 answering yes.

Trump’s perceived strength on the economy with voters has boosted his support among Hispanic voters in Nevada, a state Trump lost by slim margins in 2016 and 2020, according to CNN on Tuesday. Trump is also making progress nationwide with Hispanics, only trailing Harris by 17 points compared to his support from the group in 2020, where Biden won by 33 points, according to a September ABC News/Ipsos poll.

A majority of Democrats, 51%, don’t see a need to increase Trump’s security detail despite the two assassination attempts, according to the poll. Among all respondents, 62% think his security detail should be increased, while 32% don’t.

The poll was conducted by pollster Scott Rasmussen with field work done by RMG Research, Inc., surveying 1,000 registered voters online. The poll had a 3.1% margin for error.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
