Calculating a cost for NIMBY hypocrisy, a new report found one New England state feeling the weight of their 10-figure virtue signal.
For months, President Joe Biden’s administration has endeavored to shift the blame for his globalist open border policies to Republican lawmakers with gaslighting that has only grown more brazen as his border czar, Vice President Kamala Harris, took the Democratic Party’s baton as their presumptive nominee. Now, years of sanctuary city and state policies have driven states like Massachusetts over a fiscal cliff as one report determined a cost of $1.8 billion to cover illegal alien costs as they exist.
“These migrants represent a looming fiscal disaster for taxpayers in Massachusetts,” contended Center for Immigration Studies Director of Policy Studies Jessica Vaughan to the Daily Mail.
“Even if they are working, they are not equipped with skills and education to avoid being a drain on public coffers,” she argued of the roughly 355,000 “illegal and inadmissible migrants” currently accounted for in the state. Of those, her report indicated around 50,000 had arrived since 2021.
According to the report, Massachusetts has already spent over $1 billion on their emergency shelter systems and, as has been previously covered, faced with overwhelming numbers, Gov. Maura Healey (D) set a new cap at five days for their overflow shelters. The “Not In My Backyard” policy also included the offer of plane tickets and other travel expenses to relocate willing foreign nationals anywhere but in her state.
Having joined other blue state executives in begging the federal government for assistance to cover the expenses accrued from illegal aliens, the CIS report highlighted the handouts afforded to Bay State freeloaders that included welfare programs like SNAP benefits, estimated at $4.6 million “just for the parolees.”
Additionally, a cost exceeding $27 million annually was calculated for incarcerating illegal alien criminals after Healey signed a $58 billion budget.
As it happened, while the governor threw her support behind Harris’ campaign for president despite the overwhelming damage the open border policies have brought her state and the nation, another report found that roughly 10% of Healey’s state’s workforce lack proficiency in English, and that data was based on 2022 estimates.
“We need a nominee who is never afraid to do what’s right, who will be a fierce advocate for the American people,” wrote the governor as she shared a talking point-riddled campaign ad for the vice president. “That’s what @KamalaHarris has been her entire career.”

Demonstrating that states were not powerless, but rather complicit, in facilitating the crisis led by the federal government, the CIS report contrasted the costs Massachusetts was on the hook for with laws implemented in states like Florida for things such as mandatory E-Verify, “believed to have contributed to a 50 percent decline in expenditures from the state’s fund for emergency medical assistance for illegal immigrants in the year since the laws went into effect.”
Among the policies proposed, as a majority of voters in a number of polls have signaled their favor for mass deportations and border security, CIS recommended limiting the shelter system to citizens, requiring local jurisdictions to abide by ICE detainers, and repealing the law allowing illegal aliens to obtain driver’s licenses among other actions.
