‘Even worse’: Biden online rhetoric overshadowing his ‘bull’s-eye’ remark called to light

President Joe Biden seemed to point fingers at everyone but himself when he urged the nation to turn down the heat on political rhetoric and many Americans reminded him of his own words.

But as the president’s Oval Office speech prompted reminders of his incendiary call to put a “bulls-eye” on former President Donald Trump, The Fedralist’s Mollie Hemingway pointed back to something “even worse.”

In a social media post just two weeks before the attempted assassination of the presumptive Republican nominee, Biden had called him a “genuine threat to this nation.”

“He’s a threat to our freedom. He’s a threat to our democracy. He’s literally a threat to everything America stands for,” Biden’s X account posted at the end of June.

Social media users were disgusted, to say the least.

One Democrat congressman called out the “dangerous lies” being spouted by political parties, addressing the dangers facing the nation on the current path in a lengthy thread on X.

“We can start by dropping hyperbolic threats about the stakes of this election,” Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) wrote. “It should not be misleadingly portrayed as a struggle between democracy or authoritarianism or a battle against fascists or socialists bent on destroying America. These are dangerous lies.”

“Following the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, we must ask ourselves questions about the future of our country and what we want for ourselves and our children,” wrote Golden, who is running for re-election in the Maine district.

“In the pursuit of short-term political gain, they are eager to exaggerate our differences and cast their political opponents as diabolical caricatures bent on destroying the country,” he continued.

“The result is an overwhelming sense of fear & anxiety about the future of our country, where the normal and tested tools of democracy no longer seem adequate to protect the common good. In this light, a rise of politically motivated violence in America is sadly unsurprising,” the lawmaker added.

Continuing down this path would be “disastrous” according to Golden who called for an end to the hyperbole, condemning any language that characterizes opponents as “fascist.”
