Miss Alabama is crowned, and social media users can’t help weighing in

A morbidly obese young woman who was crowned as Miss Alabama is the latest example of the new standards in America, and social media users are weighing in.

This year’s honors went to Sara Milliken, a 23-year-old from Atmore whose years-long dream of becoming a beauty contest winner came true on Memorial Day weekend in the National American Miss pageant.

The podcast host and mental health advocate won the crown after responding to an “open call” for contestants and advances to the national finals, to be held during Thanksgiving week.

“National American Miss is known for sending open call letters in the mail and I got that eight years ago and I was like, ‘I really want to compete. I want to do this,’” Milliken told WKRG. “I actually went to an open call here in Mobile and had no idea at the time that one day I would win the crown of Miss Alabama and get to compete at nationals.”

“No matter what your body looks like, no matter where you come from, you can do anything you set your mind to,” she said.

It was a triumphant moment for the “body positive” movement that glorifies obesity by celebrating fatness despite the very serious health issues that come along with the excess poundage, not the least of which is the increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Despite the risk of being labeled fat-shaming trolls, X users took to the platform with their brutal takes on her big win.

“Their words can hurt,” Milliken said of critics. “Even if it is online. Even something that you type over a screen can have a lasting impression on people.”

“NAM is a program based on the foundational principle of fostering positive self-image by enhancing natural beauty within,” National American Miss states on the organization’s website.

Just like ignorance has replaced knowledge in “woke” America, obesity has replaced beauty as the winning ticket.
