A reminder about America’s founding in opposition to monarchic rule had one of the few resolved House Republicans calling out “King Johnson” like “Queen Pelosi.”
After recanting her retirement from Washington, D.C. in order to seek a third term that her constituents would have “a choice,” the Ukraine-born Indiana Rep. Victoria Spartz won her primary Tuesday. By Saturday, she was holding firm to her decision to see Georgia Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene’s motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson brought to a vote as she likened recent actions to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“I’ve always said a lot of Americans died not to have kings and queens. And we’ve created an environment when Speaker Pelosi became speaker, we had Queen Pelosi, and Kevin McCarthy wanted to be King McCarthy, and Johnson wanted to be King Johnson,” Spartz told “Breitbart News Saturday” host Matthew Boyle. “That’s not how that institution should be run. And the rules and the accountability of the speaker are extremely important.”
As one of the only 11 House Republicans who opposed the motion to table Greene’s motion to vacate Johnson, the congresswoman detailed how pivotal that rule had been in the negotiations of early 2023 during the voting marathon that ultimately saw then-Republican California Rep. Kevin McCarthy elected speaker.
“We fought a lot at this beginning of this Congress to tighten the rules to have accountability, to have a motion to vacate, to have a 72-hour rule, have one subject-matter bill; it’s extremely important. And I’ve fought with a lot of conservatives to get it done,” she reminded.
Spartz went on to point out that Johnson was well aware of those details when he was elected to replace the ousted McCarthy, and told Boyle, “When Speaker Johnson came, he understood the rules don’t allow him to be a king, he suspended them, and made a deal with Democrats.”
“That’s sad to see,” she expressed with regard to the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) with warrantless searches on the communications of American citizens, the omnibus spending bills that keep business as usual in Washington, D.C. and the failure to address the border crisis.
Instead of “a Republican agenda on the floor,” Spartz argued that Johnson was striking deals with the left before consulting conservatives, “…I think Speaker Johnson decided it would be easier to make deals with Democrats. It might be easier, but [it is] destructive for the country.”
Two days prior, in similar remarks to Newsmax’s “Wake Up America” program Thursday, Spartz had conceded it was too late to try and accomplish anything meaningful in the 118th Congress as even the House Minority Leader, New York Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, had said, “Even though we’re in the minority, we effectively have been governing as if we were in the majority because we continue to provide a majority of the votes necessary to get things done. Those are just the facts.”
“At this point,” Spartz told Boyle, “I wouldn’t change the speaker. This Congress pretty much is a lost cause at this point because the election, but I think the motion needed to go to the floor. That is the rules of the House.”
