GOP lawmakers argue for defunding WHO: Taxpayers shouldn’t foot the bill for ‘CCP’s propaganda operation’

Citing communist influence, Republican lawmakers made their case to financially cut off one global organization over the response to COVID.

While it remained a far cry from a reckoning with Nuremberg-style trials that many longed to see following the draconian response to the virus beginning in 2020, the suspected COVID “cover-up” remained a focus for some on Capitol Hill.

A congressional hearing recommending a known figure of the gain-of-function research debate be “criminally investigated” found a follow-up with Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer (R), the House Majority Whip, co-signing a letter calling for no taxpayer funding to the World Health Organization in 2025.

As reported by the Washington Examiner, Emmer and fellow Minnesota Republican Rep. Pete Stauber wrote to the House Appropriations Committee’s State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee calling for the WHO to lose the benefit of American money not only for allegedly helping China “cover-up” COVID-19 but also for their failure to hold the Asian nation accountable.

“The World Health Organization covered up the Chinese Communist Party’s role in developing and spreading COVID-19 and has since failed to hold them accountable for the global pandemic that killed millions, upended our daily lives, and destroyed thousands of small businesses,” Emmer told the outlet.

“American taxpayers should not be forced to foot the bill for the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda operation,” he added.

In the letter that indicated that between 2020 and 2021 about 65% of the $700 million provided to the WHO by the United States had been voluntary, the Minnesota lawmakers wrote of the CCP, “Their misinformation and propaganda about the COVID-19 pandemic spread into the WHO’s official, and public statements.”

“It is unacceptable the United States is footing the bill for the WHO while the WHO is pandering to the Communist Party of China. Given the Chinese influence over the WHO, it’s clear that it is time to defund the WHO,” they continued as China has maintained its veto power over WHO proposals.

The Friday letter followed voluntary testimony from Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance Inc., who appeared before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic to clarify some “discrepancies” pointed out from a prior closed-door questioning.

“EcoHealth was absolutely conducting gain-of-function research, specifically in Wuhan,” said subcommittee chair Ohio Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R) as he also argued “EcoHealth’s actions themselves are a threat to national security” as a newly-released report called for Daszak to be “formally debarred and criminally investigated.”

As Emmer and Stauber pointed to China and the WHO for their failures, Wenstrup and the report found additional fault with EcoHealth for failing to report, “as required, a potentially dangerous experiment conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

While those congressional figures pointed to the various players believed by many to have been responsible for COVID leaving its mark on the world, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan (R) unloaded on the federal government’s role in keeping Americans unapprised of all available information regarding COVID in the name of curbing “mis-” and “disinformation.”

During a Wednesday hearing of the House Weaponization of the Federal Government Committee, Jordan challenged former White House staffer Robert Flaherty over President Joe Biden’s administration’s policies.

After a back-and-forth on misinformation and the efficacy of COVID shots, Flaherty had indicated “I am not a medical expert,” prompting Jordan to unload, “You weren’t a medical expert, but you could suggest to Facebook that they needed to change their algorithm so that the American people would not see stuff from the Daily Wire, they’d only see stuff from The New York Times. You can do that, but you can’t tell me if they were guessing or lying when they said something that was absolutely not true?”
