‘Oh, how charitable of Merchan’: Judge allows Trump to attend Barron’s graduation

Judge Juan Merchan told the Manhattan court Tuesday that former President Donald Trump would be able to make it to his son’s graduation.

“I don’t think the May 17 date is a problem,” Merchan had said regarding the date Trump needed to be excused from the trial over his alleged falsifying of business records.

The former president’s youngest son Barron is set to graduate high school in Florida on the date and it was not previously clear if his father could be there as Merchan had declared if he did not show up to court one day there would be an arrest.

“(Barron’s) a great student and he’s very proud of the fact he did so well and was looking forward for years to having his graduation with his mother and father there, and it looks like the judge isn’t going to allow me to escape this scam. It’s a scam trial,” Trump said at the start of the trial.

The judge ruled Tuesday that Trump could face “incarceratory punishment” if “necessary and appropriate” if he “continued willful violations” of the gag order and ordered him to pay $9,000 in fines.

But Merchan granting Trump “permission” to be present at his son’s graduation did not win him any applause as many supporters of the presumptive 2024 GOP nominee expressed their disgust on social media.
