Carville sounds the panic button over young voters

Key Democratic voting blocs seem to be abandoning President Joe Biden and younger voters leaving “in droves” has many like James Carville alarmed.

The Democratic strategist raised the alarm about the “horrifying” loss of support for the party among young minority voters as the November election looms closer.

“I’ve been very vocal about this,” Carville said on his podcast “Carville’s Classroom” Sunday.

“It’s horrifying our numbers among younger voters, particularly younger Blacks, younger Latinos … younger people of color. Particularly males,” he said.

“We’re not shedding them, they’re leaving in droves,” added the ex-campaign strategist for former President Bill Clinton.

Polls and surveys are showing a dramatic decrease in support in these key voting blocs which have long been taken for granted by Democrats. The party has been bleeding support from black and Hispanic voters and a Gallup poll last year showed 66% of black adults leaned or identified as a Democrat – a 19-point drop from 2020.

Similarly, Hispanics identifying as Democrats dropped from 57% to 47 % in last year’s survey. Polls in 2024 have so far been showing the same decreases, with many reporting former President Trump ahead of Biden in support from minority voters.

“We’re not going to convince under-30, under-35, ‘Oh, we really built a great country for you,'” Carville said on his podcast. “You’re looking at this job market… I don’t think you’re going to buy that.”

Democrats “need strong advocacy explaining to these youngsters what exactly they have at stake here,” he added.

“Forget birth control pills, forget reproductive rights, forget environmental protections, forget anything,” he added, warning of the “consequences” of returning Trump to the White House.

Carville recently lamented that the Democrat Party is dominated by too many “preachy females” and likened bad polling to “walking in on your grandma naked. You can’t get the image out of your mind.”

“A suspicion of mine is that there are too many preachy females. Don’t drink beer. Don’t watch football. Don’t eat hamburgers. This is not good for you — the message is too feminine,” the 79-year-old said in a New York Times interview with Maureen Dowd. “If you listen to Democratic elites — NPR is my go-to place for that — the whole talk is about how women, and women of color, are going to decide this election. I’m like: ‘Well, 48 percent of the people that vote are males. Do you mind if they have some consideration?'”

Trump leads Biden 46% to 40% among self-described Hispanic voters in a March New York Times and Siena College poll which also showed that 23% of black registered voters support the former president.

“The Democratic Party’s wide lead over Republicans in Black Americans’ party preferences has shrunk by nearly 20 points over the past three years,” Gallup reported in February. “Democrats’ leads among Hispanic adults and adults aged 18 to 29 have slid nearly as much, resulting in Democrats’ holding only a modest edge among both groups.”
