‘Boardwalk Empire’ actor attacked by homeless man not far from where his TV character was killed

“Boardwalk Empire” actor Michael Stuhlbarg chased down his attacker after being hit with a rock by a homeless 27-year-old man near Central Park Sunday night, according to police.

“The 55-year-old was walking near East 90th and East Drive around 7:45 p.m. when 27-year-old Xavier Israel struck him in the back of the neck with a rock, causing an abrasion, police said Monday,” the New York Post reported.

“He was attacked less than 2 miles from where his ‘Boardwalk Empire’ character, Arnold Rothstein, was fatally shot in the HBO drama series,” the media outlet added.

The homeless man is Xavier Israel and he was previously arrested for two assaults as well as a robbery. Those incidents took place in January 2022. Israel was on parole at the time he attacked Stuhlbarg.

After the actor was hit with the rock while walking in a crowd, he ran after Israel. The homeless man was apprehended by police who were stationed outside the Russian Consulate at 9 E. 91st St. Israel did not resist and was charged with felony assault according to the two uniformed police officers who took him into custody.

“A witness later told police she saw Israel pick up the rock and throw it into a crowd,” the New York Post noted.

“Israel was caught on surveillance camera footage in 2022 beating up and stealing the wallet of a good Samaritan who had given him his coat on a chilly January morning, law enforcement sources at the time said,” the outlet continued. “He was later arrested after pocketing nearly $1,500 from the stranger.”

That attack was evidently the second time that week Israel had turned on someone trying to help him.

“Days before, he pummeled a 49-year-old woman who had reportedly been trying to help him. Israel was arrested, charged with assault, and released on a desk appearance ticket, sources told The Post,” the New York Post noted. “Israel allegedly assaulted two more victims – a man and a woman – on Jan. 2 inside Central Park, according to sources.”

Israel has a penchant for violence according to the media outlet, which noted, “He is accused of randomly punching the 18-year-olds as they sat on a rock inside the green space. Israel was also charged with assault in the Central Park incident.”

After being hit with the rock, Stuhlbarg declined medical assistance. He reported pain and bruising on the back of his neck from the rock but decided to tough it out.

“Stuhlbarg has been in New York ahead of staring (sic) in ‘Patriots,’ a Broadway play by ‘The Crown’ creator Peter Morgan about the rise of Vladimir Putin. He will play Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky in the play, which begins previews Monday,” the New York Post reported.

The actor has also appeared in other projects such as “Dopesick,” “The Staircase,” “Call Me by Your Name,” “The Shape of Water,” and others.
