The cargo ship that collided into the Francis Scott Key Bridge reportedly issued a “mayday” call moments before the tragic disaster and quick actions that followed may have saved many lives.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore explained how authorities “saved lots of lives” when they quickly acted to shut down the 1.6-mile span of the bridge over the Patapsco River.

“The ship issued a mayday loss of power. The workers on the bridge halted traffic right before impact. They saved lots of lives,” he said at a press conference Tuesday.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said he was “thankful” for the people who made a mayday call.

“We’re thankful that between the ‘mayday’ and collapse that-that we had officials who were able to, to begin to stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not up on the bridge,” Moore said. “These people are heroes.”
The governor said he was “in awe” of first responders for their “courage” and praised continuing search and rescue efforts.
First responders have rescued two people though some still remain missing after vehicles plummeted into the river when the impact took down the bridge.
The governor said the Dali, a Singapore-flagged container ship, was traveling at a “very rapid speed” when it issued its distress call.
Paul Wiedefeld, secretary of the Maryland Transportation Authority, confirmed that construction crews were working on part of the bridge when the collision happened.
