A video clip of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is coming under renewed criticism in the wake of the bridge collapse in Maryland.
Though the post on X did not note when the video of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet-level official was taken, it appeared to be from a 2021 press conference when he spoke of racism in the nation’s highways and bridges. Its relevance to the day’s news about the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore made many social media users note how it had not aged well.
Discussion about a bipartisan infrastructure bill passed by Congress in 2021 prompted comments from Buttigieg that racism was “physically built” into America’s highways.

“I’m still surprised that had some people were surprised when I pointed to the fact that if a highway was built for the purpose of dividing a White and a Black neighborhood or if an underpass was constructed such that a bus carrying mostly Black and Puerto Rican kids to a beach, or that would have been, in New York was designed too low for it to pass by, that that obviously reflects racism that went into those design choices,” Buttigieg said at a White House press briefing in November 2021.
“I don’t think we have anything to lose by confronting that simple reality, and I think we have everything to gain by acknowledging it and then dealing with it, which is why they are reconnecting communities that billion dollars is something we want to get to work right away putting to work,” he added.
The comments sparked ridicule and anger at the time.
Social media users were all over the video clip as it resurfaced Tuesday thanks to the popular End Wokeness account on X.
