Monica Lewinsky celebrates milestone with fashion mag ‘get-out-the-vote collaboration

A fashion magazine and get-out-the-vote operation partnered with a White House scandal icon with an election reminder “that you’ve got the power.”

Monday, the vintage clothing store turned sustainable fashion house Reformation unveiled their new GOTV campaign as part of an ELLE spread. Centered around the message, “You’ve Got the Power,” the team-up with Vote.org revealed that 50-year-old former White House intern Monica Lewinsky would be the face of their campaign.

“We’ve seen in polls that voter frustration is up and apathy is up,” she told ELLE’s fashion features director Véronique Hyland. “We all have to be reminding each other that we can’t let that get in the way of needing to vote, that that’s how we use our voice. That’s where our power is.”

With pronouns in her bio, the self-described anti-bullying activist and ex-beret model known around the world for her affair with then-President Bill Clinton, Lewinsky was described by Reformation’s chief creative officer Lauren Cohan as a “personal hero” to Gen Xers and younger generations.

“I was like,’ Whoa, this woman is incredibly funny and smart and also a Ref babe,’ and that was the bullseye,” she told ELLE for the Style Points section feature.

Cohan had detailed how landing Lewinsky for the spread stretched back six months prior when, “I started ruminating on how we could make a collaboration happen. I had been trying to find a way to connect with Monica and a mutual friend of ours said, ‘Oh, I actually just had dinner with her last week.'”

For the fashion brand set on having their line made from 100% recycled materials, the GOTV campaign marked the third consecutive election encouraging their customers to vote, and their team-up with Vote.org. “to make voting accessible for all” included the promise of a donation to the organization.

They also released a “limited-edition sweatshirt where part of the proceeds will go to our organization’s programs to help us serve underrepresented communities.”

In 2023, Vote.org had joined no with other left-leaning organizations, including When We All Vote and RepresentUS, demanding that Big Tech enforce censorship of election “disinformation,” specifically as it pertained to Meta’s launch of Threads.

They sought the release of “a full, transparent sharing of information around any and all proposed or in-place policies related to election integrity, disinformation, voting and elections.”

Lewinsky, who had done a TED talk on public shaming years earlier, added to Elle, “I don’t know if this will sound corny, but I think a way that women can feel more empowered is by recognizing places that they may need more assistance and asking for that assistance.”

Social media users weren’t among those needing assistance as they took the opportunity to share what came to mind when the former intern and office fashion were mentioned.
