A sycophantic surrogate touted the president’s record, including the 2020 contest, in calling for a debate against former President Donald Trump: “I look forward to it.”
Whether waiting in the wings as a contingency plan for 2024 or in preparation for a 2028 White House bid, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has maintained his presence at the national level. Sunday, he took his stumping for President Joe Biden off the campaign trail and into the studio with NBC News’s Kristen Welker with an answer to the question, “Should President Biden debate Trump?”
During the discussion, the “Meet the Press” reminded that the GOP leader had called for a head-to-head against his successor prompting Newsom to contend, “Biden beat Trump in the prior debates. I look forward to it.”

The Golden State executive then turned to a reality that many warned would be a talking point from the left after Trump’s no-shows throughout the Republican presidential primary as he argued, “This is…pure projection on a guy who refused to debate in his own primary — back to my point, weakness masquerading as strength.”
Earlier in February, after Biden had revealed that he would be skipping a pre-Super Bowl interview for the second year in a row, Trump had taken the opportunity to slam the incumbent’s mental capacity as well as his administrative record.
“He can’t do it, because he can’t talk,” Trump told podcast host Dan Bongino. “He can’t do anything. He’s ruining our country.”
Further suggesting that Biden wouldn’t be the Democratic candidate, the GOP figure called for a debate in the present, instead of delaying to the fall, and said, “But I’d like to call for, immediately, a debate. I’d like to debate him now because we should debate. We should debate for the good of the country.”
When asked to respond, Biden told reporters after his campaign had previously dismissed talk of debates, “If I were him, I’d want to debate me, too. He’s got nothing else to do.”
Newsom didn’t limit his praise for his party’s leader to debate performances from nearly three-and-a-half years earlier. He also touted talking points on job creation and “cooling” inflation when he told Welker, “I revere his record.”
“I mean, what he’s done in three years has been a masterclass,” argued the governor comparing figures to the summer of 2020 when the economy had been shutdown over COVID. “All because of Biden’s wisdom, because of his temperance, his capacity to lead in a bipartisan manner which is an underrepresented point.”
Skirting past the claims of the president’s record, Welker sought to address the majority of voters’ concerns about Biden’s age and mental acuity to which Newsom contended, “It’s because of his age that he’s been so successful.”

With three debates scheduled for the fall by the Commission on Presidential Debates, of which the Republican National Committee had withdrawn from over alleged bias, at least one user clapped back at Newsom riffing on the governor’s own words in saying, “You’re an idiot masquerading as a governor.”
