The support for victims from the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebration continued with a pair of bad press-curbing contributions after Taylor Swift set the example.
With a mother of two tragically killed and more than 20 others wounded as a result of gunfire at Wednesday’s victory parade for the NFL champions, Travis Kelce’s ongoing celebration had soured many opinions of the star tight end. Already slammed as an “insensitive narcissist,” a “self-righteous hypocrite” and more, his pop star girlfriend’s six-figure donation had appeared to compound the criticism.
However, by the end of the week, Kelce, who had made a statement in the wake of the shooting, appeared to try to overcome the bad look with a pair of donations adding up to $100,000 to the crowdfunding campaign of a family whose young daughters were injured.
The eight- and 10-year-old girls from the Reyes family were said to be “celebrating with many members of their family when they were senselessly injured,” according to the campaign, and according to a press release reported by NBC News, both girls had sustained leg injuries requiring surgery that would leave them in casts for months.
At the time of this post, the Eighty-Seven & Running organization started by Kelce remained the top donor to the crowdfunding campaign with a pair of $50,000 contributions bringing the total for the girls to nearly $200,000.
“I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me,” the player had initially posted the day of the tragedy, even as he was seen partying and taking selfies.

In response to the support from all who contributed, the family said in a statement, “On behalf of the Reyes Family, we are incredibly grateful for the love, support, and prayers during this difficult time. Our family, along with the other families impacted by this senseless act, are still healing physically and emotionally.”
As it happened, Swift had made her own donation of $100,000 to the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, the local radio personality who was killed during the incident.
Likewise, the Chiefs organization announced on Friday that they had partnered with United Way of Greater Kansas City to give $200,000 toward the victims and the first responders who had done their part toward public safety amid Wednesday’s tragedy.
“In partnership with @UnitedWayGKC, we’ve launched #KCStrong, an emergency response fund supporting victims and their families, violence prevention and mental health services, and first responders,” the team posted to their social media. “The Chiefs, Hunt Family Foundation and NFL are supporting this cause with a $200,000 donation to ensure that we are helping to support the victims and first responders in the immediate aftermath of Wednesday’s tragedy.”

Despite the contribution of the player’s foundation, cynicism remained of the athlete said to be worth roughly $50 million.
