Suffering a special election loss set the former president to remind Republicans about the weight of his endorsement as he called for a “REAL CANDIDATE” to step up.

Tuesday, voters in New York’s 3rd Congressional District were tasked with selecting a representative to complete the term of expelled former Rep. George Santos (R). After local legislator Mazi Pilip (R) lost to former Rep. Tom Suozzi by roughly 54% to 46%, former President Donald Trump criticized the party-swapping runner-up.

“Republicans just don’t learn, but maybe she was still a Democrat?” wondered the president on Truth Social of Pilip, who changed her registration from Republican in 2012. “I have an almost 99% Endorsement Success Rate in Primaries, and a very good number in the General Elections, as well, but just watched this very foolish woman, Mazi Melesa Pilip, running in a race where she didn’t endorse me and tried to ‘straddle the fence,’ when she would have easily WON if she understood anything about MODERN DAY politics in America.”

Proceeding in his all-caps style, Trump asserted, “MAGA, WHICH IS MOST OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, STAYED HOME — AND IT ALWAYS WILL, UNLESS IT IS TREATED WITH THE RESPECT THAT IT DESERVES. I STAYED OUT OF THE RACE, ‘I WANT TO BE LOVED!’ GIVE US A REAL CANDIDATE IN THE DISTRICT FOR NOVEMBER. SUOZZI, I KNOW HIM WELL, CAN BE EASILY BEATEN!”

The remarks from the GOP leader came as he had already made a point of actively involving himself in the selection of the Republican National Committee (RNC) chair to replace Ronna McDaniel after he had appeared to stay out of her re-election.

The pressure to push McDaniel out came after repeated cycles of underperformance for Republican candidates and with cash on hand its lowest since 2014. Trump had endorsed North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley to fill the role with his own daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as RNC Co-Chair.

Additionally, Trump had called for his own campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita to take on the role of, “in effect, Chief Operating Officer of the Committee.”

As for Suozzi, who had served in the House through the end of 2022 after first being elected in 2016 and stepping aside to mount a second failed bid to be New York’s governor, he suggested his victory was a referendum on Trump.

“Let’s send a message to our friends running Congress these days: stop running around for Trump and start running the country,” the politician who’d announced his campaign intent before Santos was removed said during his victory speech. “It’s time to find common ground and start delivering for the people of the United States of America.”

Though the presidential preference primary is scheduled for April, the regular primary in New York is slated for June 25 with a filing deadline of April 4.
