Former Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby left the court to chants of “not guilty” by supporters after a split verdict in her federal mortgage fraud trial.

The former top prosecutor for the city of Baltimore reportedly began crying as jurors cleared her on one charge of lying on an application but found her guilty on a second mortgage fraud charge, Daily Mail reported.

Mosby “gave wracked sobs as she was convicted of mortgage fraud, meaning she now faces decades in prison,” the outlet reported, adding that the Democrat “was on Tuesday convicted of using a bogus COVID hardship claim to tap into her retirement funds to buy one of two Florida vacation homes she owns.”

The charges stem from loan applications to buy two Florida vacation homes by the progressive former state’s attorney who served two terms and made headlines when she charged the police officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray in 2015. After being indicted by a federal grand jury, Mosby lost her re-election bid in 2022.

The federal jury convicted Mosby of two counts of perjury in November for falsely claiming financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic to make an early withdrawal from her retirement account. The charges claimed she then used the funds as down payments on the two Florida properties.

The trial included emotional testimony from both Mosby and her ex-husband, Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby, who said he lied to her about their outstanding federal tax debt because he was embarrassed.

Marilyn Mosby testified that she didn’t intentionally make any false statements and signed the loan applications in good faith. Having never bought property before, she said she trusted real estate professionals and her husband during a stressful time.

Prosecutors said Mosby “lied about receiving a $5,000 gift from her then-husband, which allowed her to secure a lower interest rate,” NBC News reported, adding that tracing the gift back to her account is what led to her conviction.

Mosby faces a maximum of 30 years in federal prison for the mortgage fraud charges and could see up to five years for each of the perjury charges.

“Experts say it’s unlikely she’ll serve anywhere near 40 years in prison – but say the two felony convictions mean it’s highly likely she will end up with a custodial sentence,” Daily Mail reported.

Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby, her former husband, has not been charged and he told a reporter his “work really speaks for itself.”
