‘Get rid of him, GO!’ Bannon calls for Speaker Johnson’s ouster over funding deal

The Republican Party may need to “get rid” of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) according to Steve Bannon.

The former Trump White House adviser called for Johnson’s ouster if a continuing resolution to keep funding the government is passed in the House of Representatives, saying the Louisiana Republican is “not the man for the moment.”

“Okay. I’m not making this up. I’m not making this up. They’re taking a snow day tomorrow. They’re taking a snow day tomorrow,” Bannon said on the War Room podcast.

“The House votes are canceled tomorrow with snow on the way. It hasn’t snowed. I mean, you got a couple inches here the other day, it’s quite cold. It’s called winter. They’re taking a snow day tomorrow. So taking a snow day, they’re going to jam in a CR,” he added.

“This shows you the irresponsibility. If Johnson pulls these tricks,” an angry Bannon said, “hey, our thing is get rid of him. Go! You’re not the man for the moment.”

“People say, Steve, you can’t say that, ‘He just got in.’ No, no. A leader will emerge. That’s what happens in these turnings. Leaders emerge,” Bannon continued.

“You know, people that are on the margin come back and those people are, you know, people on the margin, people you never thought about,” he said. You know, Grant was a drunk. Lee was down fighting Comanches in Texas. People emerge. Sherman was down, I think was LSU, what is now LSU, running a military academy.”

A stop-gap bill was indeed passed Thursday to keep the government funded.

According to Roll Call:

The House on Thursday overwhelmingly cleared a stopgap bill to extend government spending authority into March, which will avert a partial shutdown of federal agencies after Friday once President Joe Biden signs it.

Lawmakers in that chamber backed the legislation on a 314-108 vote hours after the Senate passed it on a similarly lopsided 77-18 vote.

Lawmakers stepped on the gas, moving up their scheduled votes to get the continuing resolution through Congress Thursday ahead of the expected winter storm coming Thursday night into Friday morning.

Bannon raged at the vote during the podcast.

“I mean, it’s disgusting,” he said. “Johnson … suspended, you know, the two thirds, he had to suspend the rules. He’s done everything [former Speaker Kevin] McCarthy’s done. To me, he’s got to go, he’s finished. He’s proven his weakness. Not one iota of change on the southern border. You fund it. You agreed to fund the play.”

“Here’s the thing that galls me,” Bannon continued, as he called out Republicans. “You ran, you guys ran against and took money from this audience and had them work and, and, and knock on doors and walk precincts and you lied. You ran on getting rid of the Pelosi spending, on the woke and weaponized, securing the southern border, all of it and all of it’s in this bill.”

“No, no, no, no, no. We’re five or six months into this thing. Now you had all the leverage. You gotta force Biden to the table and not take a snow day,” he said. “It’s disgusting. You people are leaving town.”

Many social media users seemed to concur.
