House Republicans were set to vote on a resolution recommending that President Joe Biden’s son be held in contempt of Congress when he unexpectedly showed up in person.
NBC News reported on the “unprecedented standoff on live television between Hunter Biden and House Republicans who have long sought his testimony as part of their impeachment inquiry into his father.”
“Hunter Biden was accompanied by his attorneys Abbe Lowell and Kevin Morris. He did not respond to questions,” NBC News noted.

A report and resolution released Monday by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and House Judiciary Committee will be voted on as lawmakers seek to hold Hunter Biden accountable for flouting a congressional subpoena.
The president’s son was supposed to appear for a closed-door deposition last month but, instead, staged a PR stunt in front of cameras on Capitol Hill as he defied lawmakers.
Hunter Biden failed to comply with lawful subpoenas issued by @GOPoversight & @JudiciaryGOP.
Instead, he conducted a PR stunt on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol building.

“Mr. Biden’s flagrant defiance of the Committees’ deposition subpoenas—while choosing to appear nearby on the Capitol grounds to read a prepared statement on the same matters—is contemptuous, and he must be held accountable for his unlawful actions,” the resolution reads, in part.
Further, the document noted that the “Committee need not and will not accede to Mr. Biden’s demand for special treatment with respect to how he provides testimony.”

“Our investigation has produced significant evidence suggesting President Biden knew of, participated in, and benefitted from his family cashing in on the Biden name,” Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said in a joint statement.
“We planned to question Hunter Biden about this record of evidence, but he blatantly defied two lawful subpoenas, choosing to read a prepared statement outside of the Capitol instead of appearing for testimony as required. Hunter Biden’s willful refusal to comply with our subpoenas constitutes contempt of Congress and warrants referral to the appropriate United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution,” the statement continued. “We will not provide him with special treatment because of his last name.”

Hunter Biden’s surprise appearance at the House committee hearing comes one day before he is expected to plea not guilty on separate tax charges as he makes his first appearance in a Los Angeles court.
