Kelsey Grammer interview cut short after actor said he still supports Trump: report

An interview with Kelsey Grammer was cut short after the actor was asked to comment on continued support for the former president.

Monday, the conservative star who recently reprised his iconic role as Dr. Frasier Crane appeared on BBC Radio 4’s “Today” show to discuss the “Frasier” reboot. However, a reference to comedienne Roseanne Barr’s own resurgence led interviewer Justin Webb to wonder at Grammer’s current thoughts on former President Donald Trump’s political staying power.

“I gotta ask you about politics before we finish. You mentioned Roseanne early on who had a great comeback, but also was a Trump supporter,” noted Webb. “You were — at least you were — a Trump supporter. I’m fascinated to know if you still are.”

Grammer could be heard stating without hesitation, “I am, and that’s — I’ll let that be the end of it.”

That, according to Webb, wasn’t the entirety of the story. As it happened, the host went on to explain that it was the public relations team for streaming service Paramount+, where the actor’s third act as the renowned psychiatrist is available, who saw fit to cut short the Trump talk.

“I have to say, actually, Kelsey Grammer himself was perfectly happy to go on talking about it. The Paramount+ PR people, less happy that he talked about it at some length so we…They decided we’d had plenty of time for our interview,” explained Webb.

“But I should stress that he was perfectly happy to talk about why he supports Donald Trump and still does in the forthcoming election,” the host added.

Though those with short memories or limited exposure to the “Cheers” actor’s previous remarks on politics seemed aghast to learn of Grammer’s Republican views, he himself had never shied away from the subject.

During a 2019 interview with Christiane Amanpour for her PBS program “Amanpour and Company” the journalist questioned whether previously voiced support for Trump had resulted in his taking “any hits in Hollywood…Did you feel that you were sort of marginalized?”

“I’m not aware of taking a hit for it but now, certainly passions run high, and certainly he has touched on an extraordinarily passionate response,” the actor replied. “I don’t know if it’s as serious or horrible as everybody wants it to be.”

Grammer went on to criticize the powers that be in the federal government, stating, “I don’t think Washington didn’t do us any favors for the last 50, 60 years, I think they’ve all been sort of of the same party, the same bunch of clowns, the same bunch of really unpleasant people. And I don’t think they’ve been helping anybody but themselves.”

Earlier that same year during an interview with BBC Radio he’d made the point of stating “I’m a conservative. I have been for a long time. I’m just not a big government guy.”

Neither Paramount+ nor Trump had commented on the interview at the time of this posting, but social media users did including a number of leftists in need of a real-life Dr. Frasier Crane to address their Trump Derangement Syndrome.
