Electric vehicle “madness” and the dangers to consumer safety and worker security therein were the target of former President Donald Trump as he rolled out a vow to the auto industry.
The United Auto Workers are nearing a strike deadline and President Joe Biden’s green agenda has continued to chip away at the once-thriving free market. With Michigan once again expected to factor heavily in the 2024 presidential election, Trump petitioned voters to consider a future of “CHOICE” as opposed to one where “CHINA WILL TAKE IT ALL…”
Through his preferred platform Truth Social, the GOP frontrunner offered a Labor Day message contending that the leadership of the UAW backing Biden’s EV schemes would only hurt the nation.
“The Great State of Michigan will not have an auto industry anymore if Crooked Joe Biden’s crazed concept of ‘all Electric Cars’ goes into effect,” Trump had posted late Monday. “CHINA WILL TAKE IT ALL, 100%. United Auto Workers, VOTE FOR TRUMP. Get your leaders to ENDORSE ME, I WILL KEEP ALL OF THESE GREAT JOBS, AND BRING IN MANY MORE. CHOICE IN SCHOOLS, AND CHOICE IN CARS!!!”
Earlier in the day, he had called out UAW President Shawn Fain for agreeing with the leftist push toward regulation under the banner of protecting the climate when it could sound a death knell for the American auto industry.
“Shawn Fain, the respected President of the United Auto Workers, cannot even think about allowing ALL ELECTRIC CARS — THEY WILL ALL BE MADE IN CHINA, and the Auto Industry in America will cease to exist!” argued Trump.
“There is already a giant ‘E GLUT,’ they don’t go far or long, are very expensive, and the consumer must be given a CHOICE,” he continued. “Vote for TRUMP, and I will stop this Madness, IMMEDIATELY! Mexico & Canada LOVE Biden’s idiotic policy. SAVE MICHIGAN and the other Auto States. SAVE THE AMERICAN CONSUMER!!!”
During an August vacation to Lake Tahoe, Biden had found himself being booed as he addressed the potential of a strike by roughly 146,000 auto workers whose contract expires on Sept. 14. The president told the press, “I’ve been talking to the UAW. Obviously, I’m concerned. I think that there should be a circumstance where the jobs that are being displaced and replaced with new jobs, the first choice should go to the UAW members who had the jobs, and the salary should be commensurate.”
The incumbent’s overreach has targeted all sorts of American choices through Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency regulations that included efficiency requirements for gas stoves, gas furnaces, dishwashers and even ceiling fans. While the administration touted supposed benefits like $39 in savings over the lifespan of a fan, others were calling out the real hazards posed by forcing the market to suit an agenda.
As had happened in the wake of 2022’s Hurricane Ian with at least 21 EVs, the recent Hurricane Idalia that made landfall in Florida presented a threat of fires. Multiple accounts of EVs going up in flames were reported as a result of salt water compromising the batteries.
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis had spoken to the issue with Fox Weather and pointed out evacuees were putting their homes and communities at risk if EVs weren’t relocated away from exposure to storm surges.
“The best fire teams can do is keep water on the battery until the fuel burns out,” he explained. “If you’re evacuating and leaving an EV, or other lithium ion powered devices like scooters or golf carts in your garage, you’re creating a real fire threat for your home, your communities, and first responders. Take this threat seriously. If there’s even a small risk of your EV being impacted by storm surge, move it to higher ground before it’s too late.”
