‘Bizarre’: Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson mocked for ill-conceived photo-op

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson was among the first in line Monday to hand out pizzas to mark the beginning of the fall school season.

Accompanied by members of the  Chicago Police Department, Johnson gave students at Robinson Elementary School cheese pizzas and while this may be a favorite treat for kids you’d never know it based on a photo taken as the students went through a line.

Turns out, the pizzas being distributed were FROZEN.

More than 6,000 pizzas, provided by Home Run Inn, were handed out at 25 elementary schools on the South and West sides, with the support of the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services and Chicago Public Schools, according to PR Newswire.

The news agency noted that the pizzas were distributed upon dismissal at 3:00 p.m.

“A Home Run Inn frozen truck was parked at each location to house more than 3,000 pizzas for the Chicago Police and Fire Departments to pick up and deliver to children at the neighborhood elementary schools. Every student received one HRI cheese pizza,” PRN reported.

The pizza may have been frozen, but that didn’t stop Hizzoner from making the most of the occasion.

“Our children are our future, and I cherish the opportunity to start the school year off right by handing out one of Chicago’s signature dishes to thousands of our youth,” Mayor Johnson said. “Thank you to CPD, CFD, DFSS, CPS, and Home Run Inn for making this event possible and making our kids’ first day a little brighter.”

DFSS Commissioner Brandie Knazze added, “We are so excited to continue our partnership with Home Run Inn, Chicago Public Schools, CPD, and CFD to begin the new school year with such a big celebration. DFSS supports children and families throughout the duration of their school-aged experience and beyond. We know that they need to be supported and nourished in many different ways, and this event contributes to that effort. We wish every student a wonderful and productive school year.”
