Call to 911 about missing paddleboarder made from Obama’s $13M estate on Martha’s Vineyard

Search and rescue teams reportedly resumed their efforts Monday morning after a 911 call from a former president’s estate indicated a man had gone missing in the water.

Sunday evening, shortly before 8 p.m., Martha’s Vineyard police were among a host of agencies dispatched after a 43-year-old male failed to surface after going under. The incident occurred in Edgartown Great Pond on the south side of the island and, according to at least one outlet, had been reported from the nearby home of former President Barack Obama.

The Daily Mail shared audio said to be from the 911 dispatcher that listed the call origin as 79 Turkeyland Cove Road, the address of the Obama’s multi-million dollar Martha’s Vineyard estate.

A press release from the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) detailed the call had come from “the vicinity of Turkeyland Cove…for a male paddle boarder who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface.”

The Edgartown Police had asked the public a short while later that they avoid the area, stating, “EPD is assisting multiple agencies searching for a missing adult male paddle boarder in Edgartown Great Pond. Please remain away from this area and allow emergency responders to perform their search.”

Included in the search efforts were members of the U.S. Coast Guard, Edgartown Fire, Air Wing, and Dukes County Sheriff’s Department as the nearly 900-acre coastal pond was scoured.

Early Monday, the MSP provided an update on the search that had paused overnight as the situation was assessed. “After several hours of searching last night, efforts to locate the missing paddle boarder were unsuccessful and the operation was paused to allow dive teams, flight crews, and other responders to re-equip and assess next steps. Search assets are currently resuming operations at this time.”

“The search will again include marine assets, such as divers and boat crews deploying side-scan sonar, and aerial support from MSP and USCG helicopter crews,” the update continued and stated, “Members of the MSP Underwater Recovery Unit and the Massachusetts Environmental Police are joining the agencies and units listed last night in today’s search operation.”

Neither the 43-year-old missing person nor the man said to have been accompanying him who reported the incident had been identified to the public.

The Daily Mail stipulated that “It’s understood that the 911 call and dispatch address for the incident came from Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard home,” but, it remained “unclear if he is currently staying at the estate.”

The 6,892 square-foot, seven-bedroom home that sits on 29 acres of beachfront property had been purchased for just under $12 million in 2019, a far cry from its 2015 listing of $22.5 million, the Mail had reported at the time the Obamas bought the estate.
