Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) arrogantly declared there is “no way in hell” she’ll attend Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address in front of Congress next week, asserting that the speech sends the “absolute wrong signal” due to the rift between Israel and the West Bank.
“There is no way in hell I am attending the joint session address from a President whose country has banned me and denied [U.S. Rep. from Michigan] Rashida Tlaib the ability to see her grandma,” Omar tweeted.
“WE SHOULD NOT BE INVITING THE PRESIDENT OF ISRAEL—A GOVERNMENT WHO UNDER ITS CURRENT PRIME MINISTER BARRED THE FIRST TWO MUSLIM WOMEN ELECTED TO CONGRESS FROM VISITING THE COUNTRY—TO GIVE A JOINT ADDRESS TO CONGRESS,” she continued.
The leftist representative and “Squad” member made it abundantly clear she stands against Israel in a long thread on Twitter.

“Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address comes on behalf of the most right wing government in Israel’s history, at a time when the government is openly promising to ‘crush’ Palestinian hopes of statehood—essentially putting a nail in the coffin of peace and a two-state solution,” Omar railed.

“It comes as extreme right wing Israeli cabinet members directly attack President Biden, saying Israel is ‘no longer a star’ on the US flag,” she added.
Omar was kicked off the House Foreign Affairs Committee earlier this year as her congressional colleagues pointed to controversial remarks she has made about Israel. Evidently, that hasn’t given her pause in her hatred for the Jewish state.
I’m sure President Isaac Herzog will be upset that the congresswoman who doesn’t believe in Israel’s right to exist won’t be there to mutter anti-Semitic insults under her breath as he speaks. https://t.co/phMnWWLL7k

“It also comes as the Israeli government is pushing through what legal experts describe as a judicial coup to centralize power and undermine checks on their power, prompting months of mass demonstrations against the government throughout Israel,” Omar raged on Twitter.
“And above all, it comes during the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank in history, immediately following Israel’s largest incursion into the occupied West Bank in two decades, one that flattened city blocks, and killed at least a dozen people,” the Muslim lawmaker asserted, not mentioning the murdering of Jews by Palestinians or the fact that those “dozen people” were all combatants looking to kill Israelis.
And she’s definitely not happy that the US gives aid to Israel.
It is also not lost on me that the last time an Israeli leader was invited to give a joint address to Congress, he openly defied President Barack Obama and attacked his Middle East policy from the House Chamber.

“The United States can and should use its diplomatic tools to engage with the Israeli government, but giving the current government the honor of a joint televised address sends the absolute wrong signal at the wrong time,” she concluded.

Herzog was elected president in 2021. He will speak in front of Congress on July 19 and will be the second Israeli president to address Congress after his father, Chaim Herzog, did in November 1987 according to The Hill.
The Israeli president last visited the US in October 2022. At that time, he met with President Biden and other US leaders at the White House. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also visited Herzog in Jerusalem in January.
