Elon Musk updates ‘slur’ list on Twitter after user harassed by ‘trans activists’

Twitter mogul Elon Musk bluntly announced that the social media platform considers terms such as “cisgender” and “cis” slurs and those who use them to bully others on Twitter will, at a minimum, receive a temporary suspension.

“Yesterday, after posting a Tweet saying that I reject the word ‘cis’ and don’t wish to be called it, I receive a slew of messages from trans activists calling me ‘cissy’ and telling me that I am ‘cis’ ‘whether or not I like it,'” commentator and co-founder of Thoughtful Therapists, James Esses, tweeted on Tuesday in response to purported attacks by “trans activists.”

The tweet caught the attention of Musk, who responded on Wednesday, “Repeated, targeted harassment against any account will cause the harassing accounts to receive, at minimum, temporary suspensions. The words ‘cis’ or ‘cisgender’ are considered slurs on this platform.”

Many praised Musk for the move while others called his action “extreme.” Leftists use the term “cisgender” to describe a person who identifies with the sex he or she was assigned at birth.

Another user told Musk in response to Esses’ tweet, “Thank you! And for those who don’t know, here is some background on the origin of ‘cisgender,’ as coined by German sexologist Volkmar Sigusch.”

Musk responded, “Yup, the contemptible creep that manufactured the term ‘cis’ has serious problems. Ignore him.”

Sigusch coined the term in 1991 in a book about transgenders and wrote, “If there are transsexuals, logically there must be cissexuals. One is not to be thought without the other at all. I have allowed myself to introduce the terms cissexualism, cissexuals, cisgender…”

Another user stated, “The people have spoken. They don’t like the term ‘cis’ by a large margin!”

Musk replied, “People overwhelmingly reject this obvious slur that bigots are trying to impose.”

The social media platform’s policy on hateful conduct does not specifically list terms that it considers slurs but it does condemn “tropes or other content that intends to degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes.”

Others on Twitter chimed in on Musk’s pronouncement:
