The combative relationship between former President Donald Trump and his one time U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr added a new chapter when the former top cop weighed in on a potential testimony from Trump: “…he lacks all self control.”

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) pushed and the Grand Jury responded voting in favor of indicting the president on more than 30 counts related to alleged campaign finance violations with a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Barr sat down with “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream to discuss the political persecution and offered unsolicited advice for Trump’s counsel.

When asked outright if he would put the president on the stand were any case against him to go to trial, the AG responded, “Generally, I think it’s a bad idea to go on the stand and I think it’s a particularly bad idea for Trump because he lacks all self control. It’d be very difficult to prepare him and keep him testifying in a prudent fashion.”

Throughout the interview, Barr made note of the combative relationship they had, especially in the waning days of the administration, and the lawyer bristled when suggesting anyone could ever have considered him a “toady” for Trump.

Despite butting heads, he stuck with the facts of the case and said of suggestions it was a political persecution, “Based on what we know, it certainly appears to be. I think the American people see that. It’s the very essence of the abuse of the prosecuting function which is pursuing a person rather than pursuing a real crime.”

Barr went on to accuse the George Soros-backed Bragg of “interfering in a federal election process and his case is built on an alleged violation of federal law,” as he dismantled the notion that a local DA was within his jurisdiction to level federal charges against a former president.

Thus far, Trump has appeared to benefit from the indictment as one poll found him gaining 10 points while his closest competitor, the undeclared Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis lost 8 percent from 10 days prior. Additionally, his campaign said that $4 million had been raised in the first 24 hours after the news broke, with many donations first-time contributions to the 2024 race.

As to the bigger picture which included Congress’ efforts to intercede on Bragg’s overreach and the potential for other DA’s to attempt similar stunts, Barr said he hoped this indictment would get resolved quickly with the restoration of legal order, but, “I do think that this is a watershed moment and I don’t think it’s gonna end up good for the country. Part of the problem, of course, is the corruption of the media which has essentially contributed to the creation of a mob mentality in our country instead of being the restraint on mob thinking. They’ve essentially encouraged this kind of thing.”
