Footage has surfaced that shows one of the two Newark police officers shot by Kendall Howard lying in the street next to a pool of blood while two civilians tried to render aid as bullets flew overhead.
The officer is clearly wounded and writhing in pain next to a pool of his own blood after being shot on Tuesday, according to the New York Post.
After the two good Samaritans rushed to the officer, three of his colleagues ran over to the injured cop as three other shots rang out. The officers drew their guns and frantically searched for the gunman. A man can be seen on a phone while a woman went to get something to stop the officer’s bleeding. She then applied pressure to the officer’s wound.
Someone on the video can be heard saying, “He’s shot. Oh, my God.”

While gunshots were heard on the video, someone yelled, “He’s on the roof” and “Get out! Get him out!”
Officers arrived on the scene at approximately 2 pm Tuesday after they received a 911 call.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka stated that the officers were shot at close range from a parking lot behind an apartment building in a residential area, not from a roof or window as previously thought.
The sniper suspect who shot and injured two NJ police officers in Newark yesterday is now in custody.
Who agrees this criminal must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law? ..And NOT released back on the streets….

One officer was shot in the shoulder and suffered a graze wound to his neck and the other was shot in the leg. The one pictured on the ground next to his blood was the officer who was shot in the shoulder. Both of them were taken to University Hospital in Newark.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy stated via Twitter, “I am aware of and closely monitoring an unfolding situation in Newark. I am in touch with local authorities and the State is providing resources as requested. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”

Howard, 30, was taken into custody after a day-long manhunt, according to the Daily Mail.
The shooter reportedly opened fire on the officers while they were questioning him about a separate shooting that occurred last week.
He is being charged with two counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
People who know Howard, who goes by the nickname “Book,” told police he had been “off” lately and he may have been suffering from a mental health episode, according to News 4 New York.

Newark Police officer Jose Yunque said that both officers who were wounded are in stable condition. The officer who was shot in the leg suffered a fracture but no major arteries were hit.
He also stated that the officer who was shot in the shoulder was “stable” and in surgery.
“He got shot in the neck. It went through his shoulder from left to right. It didn’t hit any arteries, it didn’t hit his spine,” Yunque commented. “Originally the doctors said it might be lodged in his spine. It was lodged in his shoulder. He’s alright. However, they think that he might have damage to his esophagus.”
